ASHLEY YOUNG TO BE ENGLAND'S TOP GOAL SCORER @ 8/1
This looks an attractive market to play in - with the lowest priced England Player at bigger odds than the favourite in the overall competition's golden boot.
AS we all know, Rooney is ineligible for England's first two games in the competition but is 99.9% certain to start in the final group game against the Ukraine. If past form is anything to go by, England will need to win that final group game to qualify and Rooney will be fresh - but equally not match ready or acclimatised to the competition. Despite his obvious handicap, Rooney is still the favourite in this market at 4/1 which is pretty mean given England would have to qualify out of the group stage and hang aroud 'till the Semi-finals to give Rooney a fair chance. What's more Rooney may yet be deployed in supporting role sitting behind an orthodox front man like Carroll or Defoe.
The conventional strikers Carroll, Crouch and Defoe make limited appeal. Carroll looks like being Hodgson's preferred starting forward and yet he isn't going to bag many goals against the likes of France (low ball poessession) or Sweden (physical defenders). He will make life difficult for defences but he won't grab the goals. He's more likely to score with a header from a dead ball cross than score from open play. I'd be prepared to bet he won;t get a single goal in the competition.
Captain fantastic Gerrard is usually a good bet to be top goalscorer. He is often the saviour for England and may yet take the penalties in Rooney's absence. But the fact is he does't look back to his best and is playing deeper than one would like when England are going forward.
Ashley Young appeals most. Scored in most recent England games including winner against Norway. Sees plenty of the ball and not afraid to have a shot. Looks certain to be a first choice pick. Could have a couple of goals on the board before Rooney sees any action. In great form, and fresh from a mid-season plagued with injury.
With no profilic goal scorer in the team and goals shared about, this market could easily be won by a player with 2 or even 1 goal if England is eliminated ta group stage. Young looks most like in the latter scenario.

Crystal Palace v Watford: Who Will Win Promotion?

Cheers TG, looks a decent bet but then again if England come home early having scored 1 or 2, John Terry is just as likely to be top scorer!
