Italy had a pretty mean defence in qualification - 2 goals conceded in ten qualifiers in a group with Slovenia, Serbia, Estonia and Northern Ireland (and the Faroes). As an opening group fixture, this is fascinating in the contrasting styles.
Spain are worthy favourites alongside Germany, but they didn't start well in South Africa and I don't suppose they will mind things staying level against the other group big boys. Indeed, Spain struggled to break down teams in the World Cup - only Paraguay were beaten by more than a single goal. Added to that, for all their possession Spain's goal ratio was barely over 1 per ninety minutes.
Qualification for this was more straightforward for Spain with eight wins from eight, but Italy managed 80% wins from a tougher group.
These two know they should both qualify with wins over Croatia and the Republic of Ireland, so they may well play out an uninspiring draw to bigin.
