JOHNSON TO WIN BRITISH OPEN
Final result: 0 - 1Profit: 0.00 - 1 = -1
Royal Lytham & St Anne’s hosts this years British Open and there’s a host of players with genuine aspirations of lifting the famous Claret Jug this time around. This can be the most unpredictable Major of all 4 due mainly to the weather conditions which can produce winners such as last years champions Darren Clarke, who has hardly made a cut since but it just proves how unpredictable this event can actually be so value odds are essential
The course itself is a Par 70 and is unique in that it opens with a Par 3 and actually has 3 of them on the front 9. The back 9 typically plays into the wind and whilst it isn’t the longest of courses it does possess over 200 bunkers, so it’s not a course which can be overpowered and accuracy is of paramount importance
Big hitters will struggle here and I predict the winner will be the player that harnesses his power, plays smart patient golf and offcourse makes the clutch putts when it really matters.
My strategy for this event, just like the Masters, is to pick 3 players at reasonable odds and place 2 points on each of them. I then add 4 additional picks at high value odds with 1 point being placed on each of those. Hopefully we get a similar result to the Masters when Bubba brought us home a big profit!
Here’s how I see it:
My big 3:
Lee Westwood @ 17s with Bwin (2 Points) Up until now the English man has always been the bridesmaid and ever the bride with 14 Top 10 finishes in the Majors – 9 Top 5 – 7 Top 3 and 2 runner up finishes. His game is rock solid from tee to green which is essential on this course and if he can just get the putter rolling a little smoother then he has a real chance here
Rory Mc Ilroy @ 17’s with Bet365 (2 Points) The Irish man has had a disappointing 2012 so far by his own high expectations but don’t be surprised to see him figure significantly in this years Open, providing the weather doesn’t blow his chances off course. His iron play is majestic and he plays well on this course. His price is attractive and worth a small stake
Padraig Harrington @ 21’s with Ladbrookes (2 Points) I’ve backed another Irish man in my big 3 this time for 3 solid reasons. 1: Padraig is a 3 time Major Champion and won this event twice already. 2: He has adapted his long game off the tee loosing yardage but increasing accuracy which is fine on this type of course, as accuracy is much more valuable than distance. 3: There’s very few better at scrambling on links courses than the Dubliner which will be crucial at this years event
My 4 Outsiders:
Sergio Garcia @ 34’s with Bet365 (1 Point) Just like Westwood Garcia has done all but won a Major with an incredible 17 top 10 finishes and an agonizing 3 runner up finishes, which have all come on courses similar to this. The Spaniard is an excellent iron player and also controls his ball superbly in windy conditions which could be a factor here
Graeme Mc Dowell @ 34’s with Bet365 (1 point) The Irish man already has his maiden Major tucked under his belt and narrowly missed out on adding to that at this years US Open finishing just 1 stroke back. His form is good – he loves Links golf and has the temperament if close on Sunday to close the deal, so at these odds I’m taking a small stake on him
Rickie Fowler @ 41’s with Paddy Power (1 Point) The young American finally secured his maiden PGA Tour win this season and this appears to have lifted an enormous burden off his young shoulders. His iron play is excellent and I’m shocked to see such a high price available for him so I’m including him as one of my 4 high odds picks
Dustin Johnson @ 67’s with Stan James (1 Point) An injury hit season has curtailed the big American this year but he showed with his recent win on the PGA Tour that he’s fit and back to playing at a high level (His 6th PGA Tour win) He also went close last year on a much tougher course than this one and in horrible conditions so Links golf won’t faze him. He’s also managed 4 top 10 finishes so far in Majors including a runner up finish, so his time is beckoning and at this price he’s surely worth a small stake. Big Dustin is the only ‘Big Hitter’ to make my picks due mainly to his performance at last years British Open and the massive price available
Overall the main omissions from my perspective are Woods, Mickelson, Donald & perhaps Mahan who I considered but the price on Woods is much too low, Mickelson will struggle off the tee here if he doesn’t adapt his game and play a little more conservative, Donald I feel just lacks something that may mean he won’t win one of these big Majors and Hunter Mahan whilst playing fantastic just doesn’t have the game for Links golf
I’ll post daily tips as the event progresses and hopefully we make a decent return by Sunday evening
It should be a great event with lots of ups & downs so sit back relax and enjoy
