LUKE DONALD TO WIN THE OPEN AT 21
Final result: 0 - 1Profit: 0.00 - 2 = -2
The players are beginning to grumble about the rough at Royal Lytham & St Annes. Apparently the grass is brutal (Darren Clarke) and unplayable (Tiger Woods) if you leave the fairway.
Perhaps it would be wise to look for the qualities that the winner must possess if he is going to emerge victorious on Sunday.
Driving accuracy is key, and Donald catches the eye at 15th in the rankings with over 67% of fairways hit. More impressive though, is his number 1 ranking for scrambling - something that any contender is going to have to do if restricted by the rough.
At 20/1 with Ladbrokes for arguably the best player in the field, you only have to wonder at his metal strength. Well, he won the Transitions Championship in March claiming just shy of $1Million, and the BMW by four strokes in May, so he has recent experience of closing out for a win.
Donald has the discipline and ability to contend on Sunday, and at odds of 21 I am keen to back him for success.
