You won’t find very many matchups with two starting pitchers this bad very often. But in today’s game between the San Diego Padres and Miami Marlins we have two untouchables that give us a great chance at reaching the Over with ease. Kip Wells goes for the Padres tonight. While he amazingly holds a 4.00 ERA, his WHIP is 1.67 and he is striking out less batters than he walks – 4.3 K’s versus 4.6 walks per nine innings. You simply can’t survive at the big league level with that kind of ratio for long. His fastball is averaging less than 90 miles per hour and his off-speed stuff isn’t very good. In his last three starts, the right-hander is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA and 1.80 WHIP. Wells has been fortunate that he pitches half of his games in the pitcher-friendly Petco Park, otherwise his ERA is probably be in the 6’s right now for the season.
Carlos Zambrano is on the other side and he’s been an absolute train wreck since early June. In his last eight starts, Big Z is 1-5 with a 7.68 ERA and an abysmal 2.20 WHIP. His strikeout-to-walk ratio is even worse at 23-34. It’s a bit of a shocker that he’s been able to maintain his spot in the rotation for this long, as almost anyone in their minor league system could pitch better than this. His control issues continue to get the best of him and his mental state is seemingly at an all-time low for this 31-year old. Neither one of these offenses has much firepower, but that doesn’t matter. If they can just stay patient, the walks will come to them and their will be plenty of opportunities for the starting pitchers to get themselves into trouble today. Only way to play this game is over the total and we get a good number to play it at.
