Spain was a candidate for medals while USA has improved a lot in waterpolo, but still not enough to face big European teams.
Montenegro, current world champs, defeated Spain on quarterfinal game by 9 - 11, while USA lost big 8 - 2 versus Croatia. Also, USA had two really bad results during groups stage against teams with similar potential as Spain: Hungary (11 - 6) and Serbia (11 - 6). Spain also had his losts, but all of them in tight games and with chances for the victory.
Just the motivation factor is on the USA side, as fighting for ending Olympics in 5th position is a great result for USA and just a normal one for Spain. But, once you're in the pool, always wanna win.
