Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday and this really is a big game already for both managers following disappointing starts for both clubs
Arsenal have failed to score in their opening two games at home to Sunderland and away to Stoke. The only positive for manager Arsene Wenger is they do look much more solid this season with 2 clean sheets to date but then again they will face greater challenges in the coming games to test that theory. (Starting at Anfield this weekend) The departures of Van Persie & Song from the Emirates is yet another huge blow and despite the arrival of quality players like Podolski & Giroud it’ll take them time to settle and time isn’t something Arsenal supporters are prepared to allow following 7 years without silverware. The pressure is on this Arsenal squad and it’ll be interesting to see how they handle that
As for Liverpool they start yet another season with a new manager and this time it’s Brendan Rogers who had a magnificent season last year with newly promoted Swansea. However, it’s one thing overachieving with an underdog and quite another leading a club who believe they should be competing for the title or at the very least a Champions League berth so this will also be an interesting season at Anfield
An opening day loss at West Brom wasn’t what the doctor ordered for Liverpool and despite an excellent performance at home to Man City their defensive lapses still meant they only secured a point which was their Achilles heel last season with only 6 home wins all year and an incredible 9 draws seriously stopping them building any momentum in the league. They’ll need to improve on their home results this season if they have genuine ambitions of improving on their 8th place finish last time around
Head to head in this fixture heavily favours Arsenal in recent times with the home team failing to win in any of their last 5 home Premier League games against the Gunners. However, this is an Arsenal team struggling with confidence and lacking a serious cutting edge so I feel they can do it this year, if they maintain their performance level from the Man City game and tighten up at the back, following 5 goals being conceded in their opening 2 games
