Tour de France Betting Guide

By Lasse, BettingExpert

Tour De France Got any plans from July 4th to 26th? Well, unless they involve considerable time in front of your flat screen TV or subsequently a mobile home on the roads of France, you should seriously consider changing them. The 96th Tour de France (TDF) will without doubt be one of the highlights of the sports year 2009 and is a don't-miss-event for any fan of cycling. In this article, we will deliver an early 2009 Tour De France Preview so you can get started on Le Tour betting.

This year will especially be a treat for those who value the theatrical element of the Tour. After winning seven consecutively tours and being retired from professional cycling since 2006, Lance Armstrong is back. His epic comeback has already given the Tour a touch of drama. There are those who regard his comeback as nothing more than a publicity stunt to promote his Livestrong Foundation and feels his taking advantage of his celeb status. Others can't stop clapping their hands and expect him to regain the cycling throne he abdicated three years ago.

Tour De France 2009 Tips

The King Returns! Armstrong could have won twenty times without ever really winning the love of the French cycling enthusiasts. The relationship between Armstrong and French media and public has had its up's and down's and he has more than once indicated that it wasn't the love from the French that kept him running. Instead his obsession with winning the legendary jersey has been like a scarf in front of a bull "Yellow has taught me the true meaning of sacrifice. Yellow makes me suffer. Yellow is the reason I'm here", he said.

After the initial surprise of the comeback speculations began in the cycling community. Was he fit to even finish the race or could he actually be a threat to his much younger opponents such as last year's winner, Carlos Sastre? Even though Armstrong was a very versatile and not to mention strong rider he is going to compete with riders ten years younger. One of the big questions is if Armstrong's huge experience is enough to get him to Paris, dressed in yellow? Whether or not, the suspense of this year's race will match any Steven King novel. Besides all the fuss caused by old man Lance this year's Tour also offers exciting new developments on the route.

Especially worth noticing is stage 20 from Montelimar to Mont Ventoux - the last stage before entering Paris. In the history of Tour De France there has never been a mountain stage that late in the race. And what a mountain. 1,912 meters high, the bald Mount Ventoux, has been the setting of dramatic events in the Tour, among other things causing legendary Eddy "the Canibal" Merckx to pass out in 1970 and the fantastic duel between Pantani and Armstrong in 2000.
