The 2024 Copa Libertadores has reached the halfway point and our South American expert Nathan Joyes is continuing his journey to find value, this time with his prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.
Palmeiras top Group F and a win in Uruguay will almost seal their qualification to the knockout stages. Liverpool are currently fighting to join the Serie A outfit, but the stats suggest they are overperforming, and that’s expected to catch up with them sooner rather than later.
Brazil, Copa Libertadores, Thursday, May 9th, 23:00 (UK)
Liverpool head into round four, the Copa Libertadores level on points with Independiente del Valle, three points clear of San Lorenzo. Draw against the Ecuadorians and a victory over the Argentinians on home soil is the reason why they are in the running for a knockout place.
However, if we dive deeper into the statistics, Liverpool are over performing for the amount of points they are and where they sit currently in Group F.
With an xG of 0.37 against Independiente del Valle, and.an xG of 0.53 against San Lorenzo, late set pieces have salvaged important points for the hosts.
Liverpool’s only game on the road in this competition so far was against their next opponents and although they took the lead early on the Brazilians fought back brilliantly and scored three goals, dominating the rest of the match.
There’s no denying Liverpool’s spirit has served them well so far, but up against a superior opponent who can handle tough away trips in this competition, they are likely to struggle to break down a resilient defence.
The hosts are underperforming in their domestic league and although Palmeiras are struggling to score goals in theirs, they can stamp their authority in this fixture and claim three points.
The visitors have rotated heavily throughout the competition, but it’s likely that Endrick will feature at some point during the match – but I believe he’ll start. The Real Madrid bound teenage sensation did lead the line in Ecuador and scored with a fine header as Palmeiras came from behind to win.
It’s safe to say Endrick hasn’t been amongst the goals, aside from his goal in the Libertadores, But facing a weaker opponent against Liverpool should give him plenty of opportunities.
The amount of attacking talent Palmeiras has within their ranks is frightening, as we saw when both teenage stars Estevao and Luis Guilherme. Both contributed in the Libertadores match in Ecuador as well as in the.Copa do Brasil.
Abel Ferreira likes to play with plenty of width, which will help create room for Endrick. Proving to be more effective in the air, as well as with the ball at his feet, the Uruguayan defence may struggle to keep him quiet across the 90 minutes.
Palmeiras still need to qualify for the group, and the earlier they can do that, the better. If Endrick leads the line, he’ll create opportunities himself to score in back-to-back Libertadores matches.
As discussed above, Palmeiras came from behind to beat Liverpool when these two sides met in round three. The hosts on that occasion were showing vulnerability at the back, specially from set pieces, but seem to have addressed that particular issue in recent weeks.
Liverpool couldn’t withstand the Brazilians attack, and although they have performed rather well at home, they haven’t faced anyone with the quality of Palmeiras just yet in Uruguay.
It’s also important to note Liverpool do not play their “home” matches at their normal stadium due to CONMEBOL stating it isn’t up to scratch. Therefore, the “hosts” will be playing in a near empty stadium, and Palmerias won’t have to endure an intimidating atmosphere.
If Palmeiras can get up and running in the first half, they’ll be able to expose a stretched Liverpool side and carve them open as they did in the reverse leg.
Liverpool vs Palmeiras Prediction odds via bet365 as at 13:00, May 4th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Abel Ferreira will be grateful he has an almost fully fit squad to choose from when his team travels to Uruguay. The Portuguese head coach continues to rotate his young talents including Endrick, Estevao and Luis Guilherme in order to protect them as they begin their senior careers.
The hosts will very much be relying on Luciano Rodriguez to lead the line and show why European clubs are showing significant interest in the Uruguayan international. However, providing him with good service may be challenging against the far superior Brazilian side.
Liverpool possible starting lineup:
Guruceaga; Cayetano, Martinez, de los Santos, Rosso, Amaro, Barrios, Lemos, Garcia Cardozo, Ocampo, Rodriguez
Palmeiras possible starting lineup:
Weverton; Piquerez, Luan, Gustavo Gomez, Marcos Rocha, Moreno, Rios, Endrick, Veiga, Mayke, Rony
