Each of the high-odds underdogs has had their chances this week and I’m not going to be discouraged because Matteo Martineau had a service game to win the first set and lock in profit or because Mackenzie McDonald found his footing and blew a 5-1 tiebreak lead to once again blow guaranteed profit on the match.

Rinderknech’s serve is simply too big and Struff’s return game is too low-margin and far too aggressive to succeed against the pace coming from the other side of the net. I do think Struff is the better mover and is probably more natural getting to net and closing points there so they should be the favorite, but you can’t tell me a match that is likely to be decided by tiebreak sets or the odd break of serve is such a lopsided tilt. I’ll once again load up on the underdog to keep things close and hope that for once, they come through with the goods. Our Struff vs Rinderknech prediction is for Rinderknech to keep things nice and close.

Jan Lennard Struff Recent Form

It’s no secret that Struff plays a big game and probably has some of the most raw power in his tennis of almost anyone on the circuit. The problem is that he isn’t all that willing to reign it in and add some more margin, meaning he tends to hit his fair share of unforced errors.

He’s also not the most natural returner out there and he can sometimes get right up on the baseline. That leads to either having no time to return serve and hitting an error (most of the time) or catching it cleanly occasionally and giving the server no chance (far more rare).

As a result, we tend to see him involved in many longer sets, even in slower conditions. That is unless he plays an error-prone service game or manages to string together a few winners with those high-risk, high-reward returns.

Playing against the tall Frenchman, I think it stands to reason that Struff is going to be seizing control of points even less than normal come Thursday.

He played a nice first grass match of the season, but even that one was won with just a single break of serve against a less experienced grass courter in Flavio Cobolli who can serve but doesn’t have as much to that shot as Rinderknech.

Arthur Rinderknech Recent Form

Hasn’t been a great year for the 28-year-old since winning the Lille Challenger back in early March. The good news for him? He’s back onto the surface that closest mirrors the kind of low bouncing conditions of indoor hard courts.

A year ago he played an incredible number of tiebreaks and close sets, and that shouldn’t surprise anyone. Rinderknech isn’t the best mover and doesn’t have the best timing on return, but he does possess a booming serve and forehand combination.

The one concern for him would be the foot injury that forced him to retire after the fourth set in Paris against Tomas Martin Etcheverry, though it didn’t seem like it played a role at all in his opening match against American Alex Michelsen.

Jan Lennard Struff vs Arthur Rinderknech H2H – Stat of the Match

The only meeting between these two came over a year ago on indoor hard courts in Pau, France, where Rinderknech won 6-4, 6-4. Now, Struff has surged his way up the rankings and onto the main tour since that encounter, which kind of explains the incredibly high odds on Rinderknech this time out.

Still, I think the fact that the Frenchman has proven he can stay close in quicker conditions bodes well for him on Thursday.
