York Ebor Tips 2020, Wednesday 19th August, Day 1 Schedule & Selections

A cracking start to the best four days of racing in the North, with four hugely competitive handicaps and three Group races providing something for every fan of the turf. The ground is sure to be immaculately prepared, with the track suffering along with all others from a loss of fixtures as a result of the global pandemic in 2020.

With the weather forecast set fair, fast ground is on the cards, and the highlight of the opening day is undoubtedly the Group 1 Juddmonte International at 3.15pm. This valuable and prestigious prize has a rich history, with Frankel in 2012 running out a truly facile winner, delighting the packed house who roared home Sir Henry Cecil’s superstar all the way up the straight.

Day 2 on the Knavesmire is lit up by the Group 1 Darley Yorkshire Oaks at 3.15pm, always producing a cracking top class field of fillies and mares from all over the world. Run over the Epsom Oaks trip of 1m4f it seems sure to be a cracking contest in 2020, although the 2017 and 2019 winner Enable is likely to bypass this years renewal.

Three Group races light up Friday at York, with the real speedsters dominating proceedings in the Group 1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at 3.15pm. This five furlong prize has produced some fantastic displays over the years, with perhaps the legendary Lochsong the most spectacular in 1993.

York Ebor Tips 2020, Saturday 22nd August, Day 4 Schedule & Selections

Traditionally this day attracts one of the biggest crowds of the entire turf season, but 2020 is sure to have a rather different eerie feel with all four days taking place behind closed doors. The Skybet Ebor Handicap (3.35pm) is always a fantastic betting race, run over the stamina sapping one mile six furlong trip and always attracting a maximum field chasing the huge prizemoney (remarkable £250,000 this year despite austere times).

There have been some terrific gambles landed in this heritage handicap over the years, with Sir Mark Prescott often priming a progressive stayer to land the cash, but perhaps the tough Sergeant Cecil (2005) is the most memorable winners in recent history.

How To Bet On York Ebor Racing Festival

What are the keys to betting on the York Ebor Festival? In the lead up to the event, our racing expert Stephen Harris gives us his top York Ebor Festival tips.

The Effect Of the Draw

York is always in immaculate condition for the big Ebor Festival, that is traditionally the best four days racing in the northern calendar. Fast ground seem certain in 2020, but there is often a discernible draw bias that astute punters will take into close consideration. On the straight course over five and six furlongs the runners tend to avoid either rail, racing up the middle of the track, so runners drawn on the wing can be at a disadvantage (either through racing with no cover alone, or having to duck in behind and forfeit track position). On the round course, low numbers are at a definite advantage at all races up to 1m4f (although arguably the mile trip is where it is most pronounced).

Speed Is Of the Essence

York is a completely flat track where the pace usually holds out on fast ground, and those runners with raw speed from the front are often seen to maximum effect here. Unlike tracks like Pontefract or Sandown, there is no stiff uphill finish to drag runners in from off the pace, and it can often prove impossible to come from even a few lengths behind on truly fast summer ground. Particularly in sprints, a runner with brute early pace drawn up the middle can be extremely hard to catch, and it is little wonder that horses like Battaash are so destructive at this venue.

Do Not Be Afraid To Look Away From the Obvious

There is a reason why bookmakers like to come out to play at York, namely the fiercely competitive nature of the racing over the four days at the Ebor meeting, with excellent prize money attracting big fields and all of the runners primed for the day. This can produce more than the usual share of shocks and big priced winners, and astute players should not be frightened of backing supposed “second strings” from the big yards. These are often overlooked because the big name stable jockey chooses to ride the shorter-priced stablemate, and particularly in this exchange driven age, there can be some excellent value away from the front of the market.

Previous Course Form Can Count For Plenty

The flat speed track on fast summer ground clearly suits some horses better than others, and year after year York form is franked by the same horses returning to conditions that suit them ideally. Watch back previous York meetings over the last couple of years using the excellent archive on the Racing TV database, not only will you spot previous winners who have the right attributes, but you can also identify those runners who ran really well in defeat (perhaps from a disadvantageous high draw on the round course). As usual with successful betting, there is a direct relation between the amount of time and hard work you can put in, and the profitability of your punting over time.

Follow William Haggas and David O’Meara

Both these two excellent trainers have superb records at York in recent history, with Yorkshire born Haggas always targeting the meeting with his progressive three year olds (and aiming his proven Group class contenders at the top prizes over the four days). O’Meara on the other hand is well worth keeping an eye on in the competitive handicaps, with his association with Danny Tudhope especially profitable over the last five years.
