Betfair Horse Racing Review
“Overall the Betfair sportsbook racing site offers a fantastic service to the recreational punter. They largely mirror directly the low margin prices on offer on the Betfair exchange. The value can be easy to find. Particularly in the early-forming markets for the next days action.
With the abilty to perm up your Betfair racing selections in a full range of multiples. This can be a way of achieving that “life changing” big win that many smaller punters dream of.
The professional will find his stakes very quickly limited (as with all other companies in the industry). But it is a still a very useful account to have. Particularly at the big meetings like the Cheltenham Festival or Royal Ascot. Punitive limits are often a lot bigger during these festivals.”

“Matchbook racing have burst onto the exchange scene. With large numbers of punters attracted over from rival Betfair. Their marketing department are certainly one of the best in the business.

Overall the Matchbook racing exchange has been a welcome breath. They have challened the monopoly for Betfair. They are particularly focussed on racing. Especially in a bid to generate the required liquidity to make racing exchanges viable for backer and layer.”

Ladbrokes Horse Racing Review
“Ladbrokes racing bookmakers have certainly had their fair share of critics. Website issues have been a major problem compared with more progressive rivals like Bet 365 or Paddy Power. Recent signs are more encouraging. The Mobile App is much slicker than previously. Their “lay to lose” guarantee on televised Saturday horse racing a very attractive.”
For many years Ladbrokes have relied on their excellent reputation. They are a big-name horse racing bookmaker. You can on Ladbrokes to price up all horse racing and take a fair bet. However it is fair to say they have been relatively slow to adjust to the internet age. Punters tend to shop around taking the best price available. They have upped their game since becoming one giant “super bookmaker” They have become more aggressive in their pricing. They are keen to attack racing rather than shy away from taking bets on it.”

Coral Horse Racing Review
“Corals have strengthened their position as one of the leading UK bookmakers. They have a much improved website to operate alongside their thousands of high street shops. They tend to be pretty uncompetitive in their racing prices. In recent years they have led the way with “guarantees to lay” on the big televised horse races at the weekend. This has been a welcome development. All punters large and small will benefit. Corals can be quite aggressive at times on major races like the Derby or Cheltenham Gold Cup. They offer good value prices if they have a strong opinion in the morning of racing.”
“Corals have one of the safest and most secure online websites when it comes to deposits and withdrawals. All in all a great bookmaker to visit. Recreational punters who like a bet or accumulator on the best racing every week will be satisfied”

Paddy Power Horse Racing Review
“Paddy Power made their name in Ireland. With some brilliantly aggressive marketing campaigns to attract punters. Since teaming up with Betfair they have become one of the strongest bookmakers on the marketplace. They lead the way with generous concessions. They have pioneered money back offers. These include “short head” seconds, “fallers at the last”, paying on the double result or refunding stakes if the horse you have backed does not jump off. They offer a wide range of markets on horse racing. They offer unique match-bets, jockey offers, daily specials. They also price up some of the major races quite aggressively.”
“The website is easy to navigate. It is not cluttered as some of their rivals. There are no annoying pop ups or adverts. Depositing and withdrawing is a simple process. Transactions are 100% secure. This is thanks to a state of the art technology giving all punters full confidence that their cash is safe. For recreational punters, a Paddy Power account is well worth having. Their excellent offers at big meetings like the Cheltenham Festival can be very tempting and terrific value.”

BetVictor Horse Racing Review
“Bet Victor focus away from the UK market. Their horse racing business has rather dimished in importance relative to football and other sports. However they are still a large sponsor. They are competitive with prices on a day to day basis.”
“A full range of bets are available online. Punters are able to bet directly into the totepool on Jackpots, placepots etc. Bet Victor have one of the safest and most secure online websites when it comes to deposits and withdrawals. All in all a good bookmaker if you are interested in playing on a wide range of sports in recreational size. Their prices are competitive. They match the best in the industry on the top events.”

Totesport Horse Racing Review
“The home of totepool betting and a very popular bookmaker for racing followers, with a long standing loyal client base dating back many decades (originally run as Totecredit with a large number of racecourse credit betting shops that were very well used by regular racegoers). “
“In recent years they have embraced the modern internet age, with all the standard multiple bets, early prices, best odds guaranteed etc etc (offered by all the top rival firms available). The website itself is vastly improved, and particularly easy to place bets into the totepools. It is the place to come to in particularly to find out time sensitive tote information about the pools on the day and the updated carry-overs (particular important when placing jackpot or placepot bets at the Festival or Royal Ascot. “
“While their actual racing prices are not as competitive as some more newer firms, they are usually available in relatively large size (especially on Saturday’s or big races ante-post). This is an essential bookmaker for any racing punter to have…well established, reliable, with a modern simple to use website and with easy access to the wide range of tote markets available.”
How to choose the best horse racing bookies
#1 – Reliability And A Proven Track Record
A punter needs to have confidence in the bookmaker he is betting with. This is paramount. The more established firms such as William Hill and BetVictor have several decades of experience in the business. They have a fixed rule book. They have efficient financial transaction practices. There is never any doubt about getting paid. Any disputes are dealt with rationally. With some of the newer bookmakers this is not the case. Punters still need to tread carefully with their cash.
Some of the newer bookmakers are based in largely unregulated outposts. They have some strange practices. Particularly when it comes to withdrawing money after a winning bet. Several punters have found very long delays before their money reappeared. Often documentation requested and many hoops to jump through before they finally receive what is due to them. It is always worth reading the small print before opening up a new account. Especially where horse-racing is concerned. It is probably safer to stick to the bigger, well founded bookmakers. Such bookmakers with clearly defined rules and practices.
#2 – Competitive Horse Racing Odds And A Fair Size Of Bet Offered
Bookmakers should have their odds up by 11am. Every race priced up with a reasonable bet size offered. Clearly no-one can expect to get thousands on a seller with very little form to go on. Or bet fortunes on each-way where there is an odds-on favourite and the place terms are massively in the punters favour. Also any punter who only plays when there is an arbitrage opportunity with Betfair is not going to get a very good service from any bookmaker. But these are often offered as an excuse by some bookmakers as to why they play so timidly.
The truth is most bookmaker prices on racing are purely the exchange price minus a few ticks. They employ few traders actually employed to come up with the prices in the first place. With liquidity very minimal in the mornings, clearly they are ripe for being picked off by astute players. Such players can themselves manipulate the exchange prices to pull the sheep-like bookmakers one way then another. This has led to a wholesale loss of confidence in the racing product.
Some companies do still stand a fair bet. Punters can expect to get decent bets on with the likes of William Hill and BetVictor.
#3 – All Races Priced Up Early And Full Each-Way Terms
This is now fairly commonplace across all bookmakers. It is the big advantage that any punter holds. The layers have to offer prices on every race. The informed backer can pick his punches. The informed punter can specialise in races where they are expert.
Furthermore the dated each-way terms are very often firmly in the backers favour. Particularly in uncompetitive 8 runner races (1/5 the odds 1,2,3). Or in 16 runner handicaps (1/4 the odds 1,2,3,4). Some companies offer prices the night before on certain races. These are a very good hunting ground for the astute. Clearly the size of wager is strictly limited. Regular winners are likely to be factored quickly. Nonetheless this is an important area that can be exploited by racing punters.
#4 – Best Odds Guaranteed
Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) is a terrific offer for punters. Increasingly scarce as a result. For new accounts many of the firms offer BOG. It is well worth seeking out. With rapid price fluctuations close to the off meaning that the morning prices can be massively out of sync by post time. From a bookmaking point of view, if they lay a “wrong price” in the morning, it effectively means they cannot win on the race. With an over-broke book at the best prices even before you get to the place market.
Bookmakers still offering BOG are likely to become harder and harder to find. Margins are squeezed. Traders come under pressure. There are still plenty of the bigger companies such as Paddy Power who offer it as standard. It can make a big difference to overall profitability for any backer.
#5 – Enhanced Place Terms, Specials And Regular Enhanced Price Offers
The firms are now fighting a daily battle in the PR world. New accounts are sought after and brand loyalty demanded by the number crunchers. They now call the shots at the top of the bigger firms. A key weapon in the competitive bookmaker industry are bookmaker promotions and free bets. Coral now have daily “price bombs” where they offer well over the odds on favourites for a limited time. Paddy Power rarely seem to let an hour go by without enhancing the place terms. Or offering some excellent value around fancied runners. Obviously these “specials” tend to be in recreational size of around £25. But it is well worth being in a position to take advantage.
At the Cheltenham Festival in March the price war competition saw over-broke books on every single race. With the best prices offered nowhere near 100% at any time when compared on the price grids. While on the Grand National, Ladbrokes’ offer of 16-1 (17.0) the field in the morning was a full four points over the Betfair price on two of the leading contenders. Clearly this willingness to take on the dominance of the machine is welcome. It is likely to lead to better value for all punters.
