Betfair Horse Racing Review

"Overall the Betfair sportsbook racing site offers a fantastic service to the recreational punter. Because they largely mirror directly the low margin prices on offer on the Betfair exchange, the value can be easy to find, particularly in the early-forming markets for the next days action.

With the abilty to perm up your Betfair racing selections in a full range of multiples, this can be a way of achieving that "life changing" big win that many smaller punters dream of (or perhaps combine some shrewd each-way selections in an accumulator.

The professional will find his stakes very quickly limited (as with all other companies in the industry), but it is a still a very useful account to have, particularly at the big meetings like the Cheltenham Festival or Royal Ascot where these punitive limits are often a lot bigger (with the betfair sportsbook racing markets more established and available in much bigger size)."

Matchbook Horse Racing Review

"Matchbook racing have burst onto the exchange scene and made a massive impact, with large numbers of punters attracted over from rival Betfair, enticed by attractive commision rates and a modern, slick and reliable website and Mobile app. This "new" Exchange bookmaker are aggressively competing with their established rival in a way not seen before, and their marketing department are certainly one of the best in the business.

They produce a weekly Matchbook Betting Podcast which discusses the weekends racing in-depth with a range of experts, and have signed up horse racing Ambassador's like Bryony Frost to provide exclusive insight on a weekly basis.

Overall the Matchbook racing exchange has been a welcome breath of fresh air into an arena that had become something of a staid monopoly for Betfair, and they are particularly focussed on racing especially in a bid to generate the required liquidity to make racing exchanges viable for backer and layer."

bet365 Horse Racing Review

"The success of Bet 365 in 18 years since starting off from humble beginnings has been truly remarkable and meteoric. The rapid growth has been achieved by investing in the very best technology available, making their website and Mobile App the best in the industry, There are no aggravating pop-ups that often cause crashes or slow things down, and the actual horse racing prices themselves are the most competitive out there. "

"For the recreational punter (smaller staking 5-20 pound) who likes to bet on big races or do "life-changing" multiple bets, then Bet 365 is the bookmaker for you. With prices up first the day before racing, there is some terrific value around, and they also lead the industry with their full range of ante-post prices (that are available in bigger size than all of their major rivals)."

William Hill Horse Racing Review

"William Hill racing provide a top class service and are well established as a big bookmaker you can trust. With their huge shop base they have in the past perhaps not had to compete with more go-ahead internet rivals for the punters pound (often betting to bigger margins and not having to attract new business)."

"This has changed in recent years however with the development of their top of the range website and superb mobile app, both now provide a comprehensive range of betting opportunities for horse racing punters keen to follow the sport. The offer of Best Odds Guaranteed is a great tool for the punter, while their huge limits on multiple bets is another big positive for those seeking a life-changing big win."

Ladbrokes Horse Racing Review

"Ladbrokes racing bookmakers have certainly had their fair share of critics in the recent past, with website issues remaining a major problem compared with more progressive rivals like Bet 365 or Paddy Power. Recent signs are more encouraging, with the Mobile App much slicker than previously, and their "lay to lose" guarantee on televised Saturday horse racing a very attractive offer for bigger staking punters with access to their huge number of high street betting shops.

For many years Ladbrokes have relied on their excellent reputation as a big-name horse racing bookmaker who you could rely on to price up all horse racing and take a fair bet, but perhaps it is fair to say they have been relatively slow to adjust to the internet age where punters tend to shop around and take the best price available. The merger with Corals is sure to have an influence in this regard and certainly they have upped their game since becoming one giant "super bookmaker", becoming more aggressive in their pricing and keen to attack racing rather than shy away from taking bets on it."

Coral Horse Racing Review

"Corals have strengthened their position as one of the leading UK bookmakers with their merger to Ladbrokes in 2017, and now have a much improved website to operate alongside their thousands of high street shops in the UK. Because of the nature of their business they tend to be pretty uncompetitive in their racing prices (with shop punters traditionally not very price sensitive and looking for mainly accumulator/multiple bets on the days racing), but in recent years they have led the way with "guarantees to lay" on the big televised horse races at the weekend (mainly just available in the shops). This has been a welcome development that will benefit all punters large and small, and Corals can be quite aggressive at times on major races like the Derby or Cheltenham Gold Cup, often offering good value prices (bigger than the exchange price) if they have a strong opinion in the morning of racing."

"A full range of bets, including being able to bet directly into the totepool is available on shops and online, and Corals have one of the safest and most secure online websites when it comes to deposits and withdrawals. All in all a great bookmaker to visit for recreational punters who like a bet or accumulator on the best racing every week."

Paddy Power Horse Racing Review

"Paddy Power made their name in Ireland with some brilliantly aggressive marketing campaigns to attract punters, and since teaming up with Betfair they have become one of the strongest bookmakers on the marketplace. They lead the way with generous concessions and have pioneered money back offers such as "short head" seconds, "fallers at the last", paying on the double result or refunding stakes if the horse you have backed does not jump off. They offer a wide range of markets on horse racing that you would expect, alongside unique match-bets, jockey offers, daily specials and price up some of the major races quite aggressively."

"The website is easy to navigate and not as cluttered as some of their rivals, with no annoying pop ups or adverts that can slow down the process of having a bet with some of their rivals. Depositing and withdrawing is a simple process and the transactions are 100pc secure, with state of the art technology giving all punters full confidence that their cash is safe. For recreational punters, a Paddy Power account is well worth having, and their excellent offers at big meetings like the Cheltenham Festival can be very tempting and terrific value."

BetVictor Horse Racing Review

"Since coming under new management (and the retirement of the founder Victor Chandler), Bet Victor have tended to focus away from the UK market and their horse racing business has rather dimished in importance relative to football and other sports. However they are still a pretty large sponsor and are competitive with their prices on a day to day basis (and frequently enhance prices of the favourites/tipped up runners to better the exchange offer)."

"A full range of bets are available online on their state of the art website, including being able to bet directly into the totepool on Jackpots, placepots etc, and Bet Victor have one of the safest and most secure online websites when it comes to deposits and withdrawals. All in all a good bookmaker if you are interested in playing on a wide range of sports in recreational size, with their prices competitive and matching the best in the industry on the top events."

How to choose the best horse racing bookies

#1 - Reliability And A Proven Track Record

Above anything else, a punter needs to have confidence in the bookmaker he is betting with. The more established firms such as William Hill and BetVictor have several decades of experience in the business, a fixed rule book and efficient financial transaction practices. There is never any doubt about getting paid and any disputes are dealt with rationally. With some of the newer, fly-by-night bookmakers this is not the case, and punters still need to tread warily with their cash.

Furthermore, some of the newer bookmakers, often based in largely unregulated outposts, have some strange practices particularly when it comes to withdrawing money after a winning bet. Several punters have found very long delays before their money reappeared, with often documentation requested and many hoops to jump through before they finally receive what is due to them. It is always worth reading the small print before opening up a new account and, especially where horse-racing is concerned, it is probably safer to stick to the bigger, well founded bookmakers with clearly defined rules and practices.

#2 - Competitive Horse Racing Odds And A Fair Size Of Bet Offered

In terms of daily horse racing fixtures, any bookmaker should be up by 11am at the latest with every race priced up and a reasonable bet size offered. Clearly no-one can expect to get thousands on a seller with very little form to go on, or fortunes on each-way where there is an odds-on favourite and the place terms are massively in the punters favour. Also any punter who only plays when there is an arbitrage opportunity with Betfair is not going to get a very good service from any bookmaker. But these are often offered as an excuse by some bookmakers as to why they play so timidly and have little faith in their own prices.

The truth is most bookmaker prices on racing are purely the exchange price minus a few ticks, with little or no traders actually employed to come up with the prices in the first place. With liquidity very minimal in the mornings, clearly they are ripe for being picked off by astute players (who themselves can manipulate the exchange prices to pull the sheep-like bookmakers one way then another) and this has led to a wholesale loss of confidence in the racing product.

Some companies do still stand a fair bet, and again punters can expect to get decent bets on with the likes of William Hill and BetVictor. There are also decent reports recently about Sportingbet and if the business is genuine and “non-arb”.

#3 - All Races Priced Up Early And Full Each-Way Terms

This is now fairly commonplace across all bookmakers and is the big advantage that any punter holds - the layers have to offer prices on every race, while the informed backer can pick his punches and specialise in races where they are expert.

Furthermore the dated each-way terms are very often firmly in the backers favour, particularly in uncompetitive 8 runner races (1/5 the odds 1,2,3) or in 16 runner handicaps (1/4 the odds 1,2,3,4). Some companies offer prices the night before on certain races and these are a very good hunting ground for the astute, with the exchange market non-existent and the layers completely in the dark as they search for prices. Clearly the size of wager is strictly limited, and regular winners are likely to be factored quickly, but nonetheless this is an important area that can be exploited by racing punters.

#4 - Best Odds Guaranteed

Best Odds Guaranteed (BOG) is a terrific offer for punters and increasingly scarce as a result. For new accounts many of the firms offer BOG, and it is well worth seeking out, with rapid price fluctuations close to the off meaning that the morning prices can be massively out of sync by post time. From a bookmaking point of view, if they lay a "wrong price" in the morning, it effectively mean they cannot win on the race, with an over-broke book at the best prices (even before you get to the place market).

Bookmakers still offering BOG are likely to become harder and harder to find, as margins are squeezed and traders come under pressure. There are still plenty of the bigger companies such as Paddy Power who offer it as standard, and it can make a big difference to overall profitability for any backer.

#5 - Enhanced Place Terms, Specials And Regular Enhanced Price Offers

The firms are now fighting a daily battle in the PR world, with new accounts sought after and brand loyalty demanded by the number crunchers who now call the shots at the top of the bigger firms. A key weapon in the competitive bookmaker industry are bookmaker promotions and free bets. Coral now have daily "price bombs" where they offer well over the odds on favourites for a limited time (usually in their shops), while Paddy Power rarely seem to let an hour go by without enhancing the place terms or offering some excellent value around fancied runners. Obviously these "specials" tend to be in recreational size of around £25, but it is well worth being in a position to take advantage.

At the Cheltenham Festival in March the price war competition saw over-broke books on every single race, with the best prices offered nowhere near 100% at any time when compared on the price grids. While on the Grand National, Ladbrokes' offer of 16-1 (17.0) the field in the morning was a full four points over the Betfair price on two of the leading contenders. Clearly this willingness to take on the dominance of the machine is welcome, and likely to lead to better value for all punters.
