Stephen Harris’ Commonwealth Cup Preview

The only Group 1 contest in the UK for three year olds that allows geldings to run, and the first age restricted Group 1 which is open to geldings in Europe. Run over six furlongs, the prize money is a remarkable £500,000 with over £283,000 to the winner alone.

Commonwealth Cup Tips 2020

Pierre Lapin, Commonwealth Cup Tip #1

Roger Varian’s unbeaten 3-y-o is one of the most exciting prospects for the 2020 season, with the manner of his two wins last summer fresh in the memory. He landed hefty market confidence on his debut at Haydock in May, and then took a step up to Group 2 company in his stride when following up at Newbury on September. There is still plenty more improvement in the tank as he matures physically, and his homework has reportedly been top drawer over the past few months (in a yard where they have plenty of high class performers to measure up against).

Kimari, Commonwealth Cup Tip #2

Wesley Ward is always a man to be feared when bringing his sprinters over from America, and this speedball very nearly notched another Royal Ascot winner for his excellent trainer when just touched off in the 2019 Queen Mary. He has plenty of natural pace (like so many from the yard), and could take plenty of catching if blazing the trail from the stalls (though does have stamina to prove over the sixth furlong in the Commonwealth Cup).

The newest addition to the programme (effectively replacing the Buckingham Palace Stakes), founded in 2015 as part of improvement to the sprint pattern around the world. Winners so far have come from five different stables, and Martyn Meade landed a blow for smaller yards when Advertise took the 2019 running of the race under an inspired ride from Frankie Dettori.
