Cheltenham Racing Festival Tips

St Leger Tips 2020, Wednesday 9th September, Day 1 Schedule & Selections

The Doncaster St Leger meeting runs fom September 9th-12th and has something for everyone, with a varied four days of turf action culminating in the featured St Leger on Saturday. The opening day has become established as Leger Legends day (since the races inception into the programme in 2010).

This race provides an opportunity for some stars of the past to return to the saddle, often for the first time in decades, and provides an entertaining spectacle with some varied riding styles on show.

This race raises valauble funds for Doncaster’s own National Horseracing college and Jack Berry House (which does terrific work to help rehabilitate injured jockeys). Previous winners include A P McCoy, Jospeh O’Brien, Brian Harding and Julie Krone, and this prize is a brilliant start to the four days of action on Town Moor.

St Leger Tips 2020, Thursday 10th September, Day 2 Schedule & Selections

This is traditionally Ladies Day at Doncaster, with a huge crowd attracted and the competiton for the best dressed prize always fierce.

However, there is likely to be a different feel in 2019 as a result of the global pandemic, with numbers sure to be very limited and the atmosphere decidedly muted as a result. On the track this is a day for the fillies, with the Group 2 Park Hill and Group 2 May Hill Stakes always attracting a high class field for the excellent prize money on offer.

Time Race St Leger 2020 Tips Odds (SP)
1:10 Sky Sports Conditions Stakes Logician (WON) 1.08
1.40 EBF Fillies Nursery Nazuna 4.50
2.10 bet365 May Hill Stakes Zabeel Queen 2.20
2.40 Weatherbys Stakes Imperial Force 9.50
3.15 bet365 Fillies Stakes Alpinista NR
3.45 bet365 Handicap Black Caspian 11.0
4.15 Doncaster Handicap Breanski 6.50

St Leger Tips 2020, Friday 11th September, Day 3 Schedule & Selections

Known as Gentlemans Day on Town Moor, this is a day of very competitive action on the track, with the Doncaster Cup taking centre stage. This Group 2 marathon is run over the stamina sapping trip of 2m2f, and is the oldest race currently in the horse racing calendar.

In 2019 the imperious Stradivarius turned things into something of a procession when cruising home at the prohibitive odds of 1/9f, and the sponsors will be hoping for a much more competitive contest in 2020.

Time Race St Leger 2020 Tips Odds (SP)
1:10 Premier Fillies Stakes Sorrel (WON) 3.0
1.40 bet365 Mallard Handicap Sleeping Lion 6.0
2.10 bet365 Handicap Danzan 17.0
2.40 Flying Childers Stakes Perotto 19.0
3.15 Doncaster Cup Stakes Spanish Mission (WON) 2.50
3.45 Flying Scotsman Stakes Laneqash 8.0
4.15 Gary Reid Stakes Tawaareq (WON) 2.10

Odds as at 2pm September 11th 2020. Odds may now differ

St Leger Tips 2020, Saturday 12th September, Day 4 Schedule & Selections

The biggest day of the four days, and usually a sell out crowd gathers to see the oldest classic of them all (although things will have a very different feel in 2020 with crowd numbers likely to be limited to owners and trainers). The St Leger was won in 2019 by the well backed 5/6f Logician, roared home by a bumper crowd as the ever popular Frankie Dettori secured a memorable victory on John Gosden’s progressive stayer.

There is plenty of high quality action aside from the feature, with two Group 2’s and a competitive betting heat for the Portland handicap that traditionally opens the card (Oxted ran out a memorable winner in 2019 and he has since improved into Group company this summer).

Time Race St Leger 2020 Tips Odds (SP)
1:15 Sky Sports Handicap Matthew Flinders (WON) 3.50
1.50 Champagne Stakes Albasheer 2.75
2.25 Portland Handicap Konchek 19.0
3.00 St Leger Stakes One Master 4.50
3.35 Park Stakes Santiago 3.50
4.05 Sky Sports Nursery Babindi NR
4.40 Attheraces Handicap Away he Goes (WON) 4.33

Odds as at 2pm September 11th 2020. Odds may now differ

How To Bet On St Leger Racing Festival

While many punters focus on the major racing festivals such as Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot, a growing number of punters also look to find value at smaller festivals such as the York Ebor Festival and St Leger. If you’re looking for value this St Leger festival, our racing expert Stephen Harris shares his thoughts.

Watch the early races to discern any track bias

Doncaster is very much a track where the effect of the draw can be crucial in determining the final outcome of plenty of the races over the four days, with a low draw on the straight course usually a big advantage when the ground turns soft.

On faster ground this advantage tends to not exist, but astute punters will watch the early races each day to determine if there is a marked bias in where to race on the track up the straight. On the round course it is also far better to be drawn low generally speaking, with a high draw particularly hard to overcome if the field size is bigger than 10.

Freshness can be a big factor at this stage of the season

The Doncaster St Leger Festival 2020 runs from September 9th-12th and provides northern racegoers with four days of top class racing. Punters do have to be careful however of not backing horses who may have had enough for the season, with this meeting often an afterthought for horses who have been on the go throughout the summer months at the highest level.

Those runners may have had the edge taken off them by a series of hard races and, with the season shortened due to the effects of the global pandemic, things have been compressed into a tigher timeframe between June and August this summer. Look instead for runners with just one or two starts so far this season, who may be fresher than most, with the ability to handle cut in the ground also usually a positive sign to look out for (weather usually unsettled and the ground can ease dramatically).

Follow Roger Varian and Andrea Atzeni

Varian is a brilliant trainer who places his horses carefully and has a superb strike rate all through the season. He does particularly well at Doncaster over the years, with a remarkable strike rate of 25pc and over 40 winners here (second only to Richard Fahey in all time winners on the flat, but his comes at a strike rate of just 9pc).

Atezni is usually on board most of Varian’s horses, and has notched up 44 winners here over the years at a good 22pc strike rate. His patient style of riding is seen to best effect here, where the races are usually competitive, strongly run and suit such tactics especially well.

Play each-way in the handicaps

There are numerous big field handicaps over the four days at the St Leger Festival, and plenty of the bigger bookmakers are anxious to attract custom into such competitive racing. As a result there is some terrific value on offer to the astute punter who is able to access accounts with companies like 365, Sky Bet etc, with enhanced place terms commonplace and often down to sixth place in fields of 16 or bigger.

Mathematically this makes betting in these difficult puzzles very attractive, and it is often worth backing a package of four or more horses all each-way to take advantage.

Stay in control, never chase your losess and stay disciplined

With four days of high class racing, the temptation to get involved is very high, but astute punters should always stay disciplined and only play when the terms are in their favour.

Never chase any losses, have a clear strategy each day, and have as many bookmaker accounts primed to take advantage of the best prices and enhanced place terms on offer.
