Top vs Bottom: Primera Season Analysis

Which Primera clubs have dominated against the bottom half of the table this season? Which have fought best against the top half? And which have performed better against the top half than the bottom? Today on the blog James Amey breaks down the Primera season so far.

In this article I will take a look at how well teams in the Primera Liga have fared against the teams in the top half and the bottom half of the table this season. We take a look at which teams have taken the most points against top and bottom half teams, as well as which teams have scored and conceded the most goals against teams in the top and bottom halves of the table.

Goals Scored

First of all we take a look at which teams have scored the most goals against the teams in the top half of the table.

  • Barcelona have scored 3.1 goals per game against teams in the top half of the league this season, which is more than any other team.
  • Real Madrid have scored 2.3 goals per game, while Malaga (2.2) and Real Sociedad (2.1) have all scored more than 2 goals per game.
  • At the other end of the scale Real Zaragoza have only averaged 0.4 goals per game against top half teams this season, which is the lowest in the Primera Liga. Granada (0.5), Valencia (0.6), Levante (0.7) and Osasuna (0.7) have all struggled to score goals against top half teams this season.

 

Next we take a look at which teams have scored the most goals per game against bottom half teams this season.

  • Barcelona have scored 3.6 goals per game against bottom half teams this season.
  • Real Madrid (2.8), Atletico Madrid (2.3), Valencia (2.2), Levante (1.8) and Real Betis (1.8) have all scored a high amount of goals per game against bottom half teams.
  • Osasuna have scored the fewest goals per game against the bottom half teams this season, as they have only averaged 0.9 goals per game.
  • Mallorca (1), Real Sociedad (1), Deportivo (1.1), Malaga (1.1) and Celta Vigo (1.1) have all struggled to score goals against the teams in the bottom half of the table this season.

 

Six teams in the Primera Liga have actually scored more goals per game against the teams in the top half of the table than they have against the teams in the bottom half of the table this season.

  • Malaga and Real Sociedad have both scored 1.1 more goals per game against top half teams than bottom half teams this season, while Real Vallodolid have scored 0.5 more goals per game against the top half teams.
  • Deportivo (0.3 more goals), Mallorca (0.1) and Rayo Vallecano (0.1) have also scored more goals per game against the top half teams than they have against the bottom half teams this season.

Goals Conceded

First we will look at which clubs have conceded the most goals against teams in the top half of the table.

  • Deportivo have conceded the most goals per game against top half teams this season, as they have conceded 2.7 goals per game.
  • Athletic Bilbao have conceded the second most goals per game as they have conceded 2.5, while Getafe (2.3), Rayo Vallecano (2.3), Mallorca (2.2), Real Sociedad (2.1) and Valencia (2) have all conceded 2 or more goals per game.
  • Barcelona have conceded the fewest goals per game against top half teams as they have only conceded 1 goal per game.
  • Osasuna (1.1), Real Madrid (1.3), Malaga (1.4) and Real Betis (1.5) have all conceded few goals per game against top half teams.

 

Now let's look at which clubs have conceded the most goals against teams in the bottom half of the table.

  • Against the teams in the bottom half Real Betis have conceded 1.6 goals per game, while Espanyol, Deportivo and Mallorca have all conceded 1.5 goals per game against the bottom half sides.
  • Atletico Madrid and Malaga have conceded the fewest goals per game against bottom half sides as they have only conceded 0.5 goals per game.
  • Real Madrid (0.6), Real Sociedad (0.6), Celta Vigo (0.8), Levante (0.9) and Real Valladolid have all conceded less than 1 goal per game against bottom half teams this season.

 

Real Betis have conceded more goals per game against bottom half teams than they have against top half teams this season but this is only by 0.1 more goals, while Barcelona have conceded 0.2 more goals per game against bottom half teams and Osasuna have conceded 0.3 more goals against bottom half teams.

Real Socieded have the biggest difference in terms of how many goals they have conceded against top half and bottom half teams, as they have conceded 1.5 fewer goals per match against bottom half teams this season.

Points Won

Finally let's take a look at which teams have taken the most points from teams in the top half of the table and the teams in the bottom half of the table.

  • Not surprisingly Barcelona have taken the most points per game against top half teams this season, as they have taken 2.5 points per game.
  • Real Madrid have taken 2 points per game, while Atletico Madrid (1.9), Malaga (1.67) , Real Betis (1.5) and Rayo Vallecano (1.5) have all taken a high amount of points against top half teams this season.
  • Real Zaragoza have taken the fewest points per game against top half teams this season as they have only taken 0.27 points per game.
  • Celta Vigo and Valencia have both only taken 0.5 points per game, while Deportivo (0.55) and Granada (0.64) have also struggled against the top teams this season.

 

Barcelona have also taken the most points per game against the bottom half teams, as they have won 100% of their games against the bottom half teams this season and taken 3 points per game.

  • Atletico Madrid and Valencia have both taken 2.55 points per game against bottom half teams this season, while Levante have taken 2.3 points per game and Real Madrid have taken 2.09 points per game against bottom half teams this season.
  • Mallorca have taken the fewest points per game this season as they have only taken 0.6 points per game. Osasuna have taken 0.8 points per game, while Deportivo have taken 1 point per game and Espanyol have taken 1.18 points per game against bottom half teams this season.

 

Mallorca and Osasuna have both taken more points per game against the top half teams than they have against the bottom half teams this season, while Malaga have taken the same amount of points per game against the top half teams as they have against the bottom half teams.

Valencia have taken a staggering 2.05 more points per game against the bottom half teams this season than they have against the top half teams, while Real Zaragoza have taken 1.73 more points against the bottom half teams.
