The Championship Football League has a rich and colorful history. It is the original football league in the world and has been around since 1888. It manages three main competitions: The Coca-Cola Football League, the Carling Cup and the Johnstones Paint Trophy across England and Wales. The Coca-Cola Football League comprises the Championship, League 1 and League 2.
The Championship is used to be known as the Second Division until the breakaway of the FA-backed top clubs to from a super league in 1992 which led to the creation of the Premiership League. Due to the breakaway, the division were renamed from Second Division to Division One, Two and Three. To reclaim their roots and heritage, in the season of 2004-05, these divisions were again rebranded to The Championship, League 1 and League 2. Since then, the Leagues popularity have increased and its reputation have been going from strength to strength that in 2007, Coca-Cola signed to be their major sponsor. Hence, the Leagues are also known as The Coca-Cola Championship, Coca-Cola League 1 and Coca-Cola League 2.
The Championship League or The Coca-Cola Football League Championship is the highest division in the Football League and is the second highest league in the English overall football league system, second to the Premiership League. It is base in around robin play and implements promotion and relegation.
The System
The Championship League is composed of 24 clubs not only competing for the title but also to be promoted to the Premiership League at the end of the season. Each club plays every other club twice home and away. Three points are rewarded to the winner and a fat zero point goes to the losing team while if the game ended in a draw, one point is rewarded to each team. These points are accumulated and at the end of the season, whichever team gets the highest overall points get the title and receives the Football League Championship trophy as well as the first to be promoted to the Premiership League. In case there is a tie with the overall points, goal difference and goals scored will be taken to account to established who gets the title.
The Promotion and Relegation
Like any other football league, The Coca-Cola Championship implements the promotion and relegation system. There are 3 spots available for the Premiership promotion. At the end of the of each season, these spots are automatically given to the top two teams in The Championship while the third spots will be given to the winner of the Football League Championship Play-Off, which will be first battled out by third to sixth placer of the league in a two-legged semi-finals leading to the final play-off which will be played in a single match. On the other end of the spectrum, the three bottom team will be relegated to League 1.

After the breakaway of the top clubs, The Football League have proven that they are here to play a major part in the football world. They are not to be set aside in the corner and be forgotten. Their reputation have been going from strength to strength and have now become the 4th most watch football league (Premiership, Bundesliga, La Liga) in the world, with Seria A trailing behind them.
