La Liga Fixtures

Real Madrid may have the lead in La Liga, but nothing’s over for them yet. Even more, they have a difficult match against Ath Bilbao in late March. The Real Madrid vs Ath Bilbao match is crucial for both Los Blancos if they wish to keep the first spot and for Bilbao if they want to play in one of the best European competitions.

The next big clash that we expect in the same period is the Girona vs Betis duel. Girona is in the third spot, just behind Barca. Betis ranks seventh, which is one position lower than Sociedad. Girona and Betis also wish to rank high and play in the top European contests.

La Liga - Barcelona player Lewandowski

The same goes for Atletico Madrid, which holds the fifth position but is very close to Bilbao. Their opponents, Villarreal, maybe a bit away (ninth spot), but still have a chance to go up. Therefore, the Villarreal vs Atl. Madrid clash is also the game many of us wish to see.

Fans can get an insight into these games by checking our La Liga predictions. The available tips contain odds and explanations of why a certain outcome is expected. Of course, it’s more La Liga matches that bettors will be able to find, apart from the aforementioned ones.

La Liga Transfers

Real Madrid has made the most expensive transfer by now (€103 million), welcoming Bellingham to Bernabeu. Although they let Benzema go, Los Blancos also signed Guler for €20 million and Garcia for €5 million.

Atletico Madrid signed four defenders: Galan, Mourino, Azpilicueta and Soyuncu. The Mattress Makers spent almost €8 million on Galan and Mourino while bringing the other two defenders for free.

Barcelona’s squad changes include the joining of Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez after completing free transfers. As Barca is trying to make their financial situation better, it is still not known how many additional transfers this club will make.

Sevilla has officially made an agreement with Bade, who was there on loan during the last season, to stay. The Red and Whites added Pedrosa to their player list. Villareal took the chance and made a free transfer, bringing Ben Brereton Diaz to Estadi de la Ceramica.

The Yellow Submarine also made their midline fresh after Ramon Terrats joined them for €2,50 million. Ozkacar and Pepelu found Valencia as their new home for €5 million each. Marton and de Galarreta are the new free transfers for Bilbao. Betis decided to loan Marc Roca and sign Perez.

La Liga Odds and Favourites To Win

Barcelona and Real Madrid have been favourites since the league started but there are a lot of high-quality teams in La Liga compared to other top leagues. It’s probably the second-best league after the Premier League. A lot has changed in these top teams this year, one of them being the transfer of Benzema to Saudi Arabia.

Many players from the top leagues decided to go to the Middle East so this shouldn’t be a surprise. The problem is that Luka Modric is 37 years old so they need more players similar to them to lead the young players. Lewandowski turned out to be a great solution for Barcelona. He took the top goalscorer title and it will be a surprise if they don’t reach new heights in the Champions League.

La Liga Betting Predictions and Stats

The only problem with La Liga is that there aren’t enough goals being scored. The average is 2.51 goals per match which is the lowest among the top 5 leagues. At least most matches finish with any goal instead of 0:0 which is 7% of the matches. The average time is also the latest at 33 minutes for the first goal scored in 93.2% of the matches.

La Liga Competition Format

The Spanish La Liga season will start on 12 August 2023 and will be played until 26 May 2024. 20 teams in total will face each other to earn the right to be called the newest Spanish champion. Barcelona took the title from Real Madrid which is their 27th.

The four top clubs will earn spots in the Champions League for the coming season. On the other hand, the fifth-ranked club is set to play in the Europa League, while the sixth-positioned club will earn a spot in the Conference League.

At the same time, the three worst-ranked clubs at the end of the season will be demoted to the Segunda Division.

La Liga Past Winners

The Spanish football league officially started in 1929, with its first champion being Barcelona. The Blaugrana is one of Spain’s most successful clubs, but haven’t managed to win a La Liga title three seasons in a row. The accolade of defending the title goes to Real Madrid, which our La Liga betting tips take into great consideration.

Season  Champions
2017-18 Barcelona
2018-19 Barcelona
2019-20 Real Madrid
2020-21 Atletico Madrid
2021-22 Real Madrid
2022-23 Barcelona

There have been only nine separate champions in Spanish football, with Los Blancos being the most successful club with 35 titles to their name.

Club  Winners
Real Madrid 35
Barcelona 27
Atletico Madrid 11
Athletic Club 8
Valencia  6
Real Sociedad 2
Deportivo La Coruna, Sevilla, Real Betis 1

La Liga Player of the Year and Top Goalscorer

La Liga celebrates its best players with an annual award given to the most outstanding player of the season. This is also of great importance when devising our La Liga betting tips.

Season Player Club
2018-19 Lionel Messi Barcelona
2019-20 Karim Benzema Real Madrid
2020-21 Jan Oblak Atletico Madrid
2021-22 Karim Benzema Real Madrid
2022-23 Karim Benzema Real Madrid

There have been few notable names that have dominated Spanish La Liga in terms of goal scoring. Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo clashed for a number of years. But there are some other very peculiar names among top scorers as well.

Season  Top Goalscorer Club Goals
2019-20 Lionel Messi Barcelona 25
2020-21 Lionel Messi Barcelona 30
2021-22 Karim Benzema Real Madrid 27
2022-23 Robert Lewandowski Barcelona 21
