The Golden Top 3x3 of the Best Football Matches
As promised earlier it’s time to look back at some of the epic clashes of modern football. But more than just listing a top 3, I’ll tell you what made the matches special to me.
I realize that many of you will have completely different approaches to the theme of this blog. However, in the spirit of deliberation and sharing of good stories I hope you will challenge my top 3 with your own.
Here’s the 3x3 list of the best football matches I’ve had the privilege to watch. The first is a list of my personal favourite team, the second is about my national team and the last is an overall compilation.
As Local Supporter
Viborg FF vs. Aalborg 2000
As a proud supporter of the small but charming Danish football club, Viborg FF, from my home town in Jutland, the 1999/2000 season was a like being on a major roller coaster. This was one of the rare seasons when we played in the top Danish league. Unfortunately, it ended rather disappointing when we just missed the 3rd place with only one goal difference to the next team.
On the plus side that year Viborg FF won the national Cup for the first time ever. In itself a gigantic triumph which meant drying out all bars in Copenhagen where the game was played.
Viborg FF vs. CSKA Moscow 2000
Winning the Cup gave access to the UEFA Cup the following season - also for the first time. In the first round mighty CSKA Moscow was finally defeated in a close home match. The overall score was 1-0 and my voice disappeared for the next couple of days.
Viborg FF vs. Rayo Vallecano 2000
Second leg in the UEFA Cup was lost to later quarter finalists Rayo. Rayo won on more goals away. Watching VFF being eliminated after playing such an amazing match, where they actually maneged to win against a La Liga team was a big blow. However, I couldn't help feeling a little bit proud of my small local team being able to compete with a top level European club. After this match VFF has only known one way in quality: downwards! They now play in the second best league in Denmark.
Danish National Team
1.Denmark-Brazil
1998 World Cup quarter final: 2-3.
It was the Laudrup brothers last game on the team and the beauty of the match combined with a tearfull goodbye to two of the most influencial Danish footballers was nothing short of legendary.
2.Portugal-Denmark
2008 World Cup qualification: 2-3.
Beating Portugal made me feel more confident about the strenght of the national team than I had been feeling for a long time. I was in Lisboa and wore proudly my team jersy when going for a beer after the win. But it was hard to find a bar that would serve us, for some reason.
3.Italy-Denmark
1999: 2-3
Denmark had to win in order to qualify for the European Championships and was behind with two goals... Denmark has had its share of bad luck in qualifying for just about anything. This time around Lady Luck was on our side. Great win.
