LaLiga 24/25 Season Review

The 2024/25 La Liga season delivered drama, quality, and a clear hierarchy at both ends of the table. FC Barcelona, under new manager Hansi Flick, rose above the competition to claim their 28th league title, finishing seven points ahead of Real Madrid with two matches to spare. The Catalan club’s consistency in the second half of the season, highlighted by crucial victories over their arch-rivals, including a memorable 4-3 win in El Clásico, proved decisive.

Barcelona’s blend of youthful exuberance, midfield control, and defensive solidity, led by standout performers like Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski, set the tone for their campaign. Real Madrid, despite boasting the league’s top scorer Kylian Mbappé (31 goals), fell just short in the title race.

Their European form remained strong, as did that of other Spanish clubs, with six of seven La Liga entrants in UEFA competitions advancing past the playoff rounds earlier in the season. Atlético Madrid, Athletic Club, Real Betis, and Real Sociedad all carried Spanish hopes deep into European tournaments, showcasing the league’s depth and quality.

European Qualification

Thanks to the Spanish club’s performance in various European competitions, they have earned five Champions League spots. Title winners Barcelona and runner-up Real Madrid are joined by Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, and Villarreal.

Seventh-place Celta Vigo made a surprise return to European football by qualifying for the Europa League, alongside Real Betis. More so, Rayo Vallecano earned a Conference League qualification spot, making this their second European outing after the 2000/01 season when they reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup.

Relegation

At the bottom of the table, Leganés, despite a spirited late-season rally and a 3-0 win over Real Valladolid on the final day, were relegated as they could not overtake Sevilla in the standings. The relegation scrap was tense, but eventually Leganes joined Las Palmas and Real Valladolid, which were relegated long before the final matchday. Sevilla and Girona, two teams that no one expected could end up here, barely escaped relegation with only a single point clear of the line.

Standout Players and Statistics

Individual honours were shared between stars from the top clubs. Kylian Mbappé led the scoring charts with 31 goals, followed by Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski with 25. Raphinha and Ante Budimir also enjoyed prolific seasons, while Lamine Yamal, at just 17, topped the assists table with 13, underlining his rapid rise as a creative force. Raphinha and Álex Baena also contributed heavily in the assists column, each with nine.

Season Overview

From a broader perspective, the 2024/25 season was defined by Barcelona’s resurgence and the continued strength of Spanish clubs in Europe. While Real Madrid’s firepower was undeniable, their inconsistency in key matches proved costly. The league’s mid-table and lower half remained fiercely competitive, with Valencia’s survival story serving as a reminder of how fine the margins can be between success and failure.

La Liga Betting Predictions and Stats

The only problem with La Liga is that there aren’t enough goals being scored. The average is 2.51 goals per match which is the lowest among the top 5 leagues. At least most matches finish with any goal instead of 0:0 which is 7% of the matches. The average time is also the latest at 33 minutes for the first goal scored in 93.2% of the matches.

La Liga Competition Format

The Spanish La Liga season started on 15 August 2024 and went on until 25 May 2025. 20 teams in total faced each other to earn the right to be called the newest Spanish champion. Barcelona took their 28th title in season 2024/25 and with Hansi Flick staying on, the future looks bright for Los Cules.

The five top clubs earned spots in the Champions League for the coming season. On the other hand, the sixth-ranked club is set to play in the Europa League, while the seventh-positioned club will earn a spot in the Conference League.

At the same time, the three worst-ranked clubs at the end of the season will be demoted to the Segunda Division.

La Liga Past Winners

The Spanish football league officially started in 1929, with its first champion being Barcelona. The Blaugrana is one of Spain’s most successful clubs, but haven’t managed to win a La Liga title three seasons in a row. The accolade of defending the title goes to Real Madrid, which our La Liga betting tips take into great consideration.

2020-21 Atletico Madrid
2021-22 Real Madrid
2022-23 Barcelona

2024-25 Barcelona

There have been only nine separate champions in Spanish football, with Los Blancos being the most successful club with 36 titles to their name.

2021-22 Karim Benzema Real Madrid
2022-23 Karim Benzema Real Madrid
