Overview of Eurobasket 2025
Eurobasket 2025 brought everything expected from a major continental championship: top stars, major reversals, surprising campaigns and the confirmation of a new force in European basketball. The tournament was played in four host countries (Cyprus, Finland, Poland and Latvia), and the final weekend in Riga brought together 24 of Europe’s best selections in the battle for the throne.
Eurobasket 2025 champion: Germany on the European throne
Germany confirmed its status as a new world power in basketball – after the title of world champion in 2023, it also won the European crown at Eurobasket 2025. In the final in Riga, they defeated Turkey with 88:83 and won their second gold at the European championships, the first since 1993.
The final was a real dramatic evening: Turkey had the lead at halftime, but Germany stepped up its defense and rhythm in the second half of the game. Isaac Bonga was the top scorer with 20 points and was declared the player of the match, while Dennis Schröder practically took the matters into his own hands at the end – the last six points of Germany were his, with a total of 16 points and 12 assists, thus confirming the MVP award of the tournament.
Along with Schröder and Bonga, Franz Wagner and the rest of the deep German roster played an important role. Germany finished the tournament undefeated (9–0) and became only the fourth national team in history to simultaneously hold the world and European championship titles.
Unexpected campaigns and surprises of Eurobasket 2025
If Germany was the expected favorite, then Finland was the most beautiful story of the tournament. Led by Lauri Markkanen, Finland first knocked out Serbia in the round of 16, and then Georgia in the quarter-finals, thus entering the semi-finals of the Eurobasket for the first time in history.
Their performance in Riga was marked as the greatest success of Finnish basketball, with the atmosphere in which the stands were painted in blue and white.
In the fight for bronze, Finland almost made another miracle – it lost to Greece with 92:89 after a dramatic finish. Giannis Antetokounmpo had a history-making game with 30 points and 17 rebounds to give Greece its first EuroBasket medal in 16 years, while Finland finished as the “best fourth” in its history.
Turkey, on the other hand, made a big step forward by reaching the finals – for the first time since 2001. Houston center Alperen Şengün was the engine of this team, finishing the tournament with an average of over 20 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists, with 28 points in the final itself and a place in the ideal five of Eurobasket.
The most important games and impressions from Eurobasket that remain
Apart from the final, several games will be recounted for a long time. The semi-final between Germany and Finland (98:86) was a symbol of the entire tournament – Finland started bravely, but qualitatively deeper Germany broke the resistance and won the final.
