Today’s Horse Racing Tips – March 17th

The final day of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival begins with the JCB Triumph hurdle, run on the new course over 2m1f and confined to 4-y-o juveniles. In years gone by there have been huge field sizes of varying ability, but with other options now available to trainers the field tends to be more select and generally of higher quality. The event dates back to 1939 and originally was dominated by the French, with six of the first seven winners going over the channel, but these days the Irish tend to milk the prize. In 2022 Vauban ran out a very impressive winner for Willie Mullins and the yard has the front three in the market for 2023.

There are four supporting cards to keep punters busy through to the evening, with Doncaster and Fakenham over sticks, and AW fixtures at Newcastle and Wolverhampton under lights.

Today’s Daily Nap

Lossiemouth

Cheltenham 1:30 (UK time)

Willie Mullins filly lost no caste in defeat at the Dublin Racing Festival at Leopardstown in February, and is strongly fancied to take the Triumph Hurdle under Paul Townend. There is little doubt that the Irish juvenile form seems at least a stone stronger than their UK counterparts, and she is expected to comprehensively reverse the form with stablemate Gala Marceau. Punters are now getting around 7/4 with the bookmakers after that unlucky defeat (having been odds-on previously), and that does now make plenty of appeal in a race lacking a huge amount of depth (and the Irish level of form seemingly miles ahead of their UK rivals).

Odds: NA

Today’s Value Angle

Pembroke

Cheltenham 2:10 (UK time)

Dan Skelton’s unexposed novice proved a really expensive failure here in January, hammered down to 5/4f from 5/2 in the early market, but finding Rock my Way just too strong up the hill. That has certainly not harmed his opening handicap mark for this valuable prize, and he remains with loads of potential over hurdles after just four runs in this sphere. The yard have a brilliant record in this race over the years, and he really should be going close if enjoying any luck in running under a patient ride from Harry Skelton.

Odds: NA

Odds are best odds available as at 2am March 17th 2023. Odds may now differ.
