There are five scheduled race meetings in Britain and Ireland on Monday, with flat fans in for a varied afternoon on the eve of Royal Ascot. They have Carlisle, Chepstow, Gowran Park and Windsor to study, with some tough handicaps to try to solve at the Cumbrian venue (and the top northern yards sure to be well represented in the traditionally strong novice/maiden contests). Jumping fans have an evening card at Kilbeggan to attack, with big fields and the action starting at 5.15pm.

Carlisle 2.30 (UK time)
Michael Dods has his team in excellent form at the moment with 5 winners in the last fortnight, and his battle-hardened handicapper has optimum conditions to return to winning form at Carlisle on Monday. He has won only 1 of his 18 career starts, but has run really well in defeat twice at Thirsk this season, and this stiffer six furlongs will be ideal under Connor Beasley.
Odds: 8.00
Ebony Maw
Carlisle 3.00 (UK time)
Ewan Whillans 7-y-o has looked better than ever this season, winning at Ayr in April and running a cracker in defeat from the front at Hamilton last time out. This 1m6f test of stamina should suit with positive tactics again on the cards, and the rain easing conditions in the past week is very much in his favour under regular rider Rowan Scott.
Odds: 4.00
