Saturday’s ITV cameras cover the final day of the Aintree Grand National meeting, with the big race at 4.00pm always one of the biggest betting races of the year. The ground conditions seem sure to be extremely testing, and the emphasis will very much be on stamina for all the races on an ultra-competitive card. Irish trainers hold an extremely strong hand in 2024, with Gordon Elliott in particular targeting the race with a big team of stayers. Stephen Harris’s 2024 Grand National tips are Latenightpass and Crebilly.
In this article:
Latenightpass
Aintree 4:00 (UK time)
Aintree has always been on the agenda for this tough and genuine stayer, and he can give top female rider Gina Andrews a well deserved victory in the biggest betting race of the jumps season. He had a sighter over hurdles at Haydock in February to keep him ticking over, and comes into this freshened up and primed to run a big race (with the deep ground conditions perfect for him).
Odds: 21.00
Crebilly
Aintree 2:30 (UK time)
Jonjo O’Neill’s progressive young chaser lost no caste in defeat when second behind Shakemup’Arry in the Plate at the Festival, taking a long time to warm to his task but running on strongly up the hill. He remains with loads of scope to keep on improving over fences after just four career starts, and the emphasis on stamina over 3m1f in the mud should be his optimum conditions.
Odds: 7.00
Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:20 | Aintree | West Balboa | Dan Skelton’s handicapper has been building up to full fitness from a falling handicap mark in three runs so far this winter, and caught the eye under a negative ride from well off the pace at Kempton last time out. Harry Skelton is sure to get a strong pace to aim at here in a huge field, and the prevailing testing ground conditions should suit ideally. |
1:55 | Aintree | Brighterdaysahead | Gordon Elliott’s novice was one of the eyecatchers to take from the Cheltenham Festival, given an overly confident ride and just failing to reel in the pacey Golden Ace in a sprint from the last. She still travelled strongly to confirm the previous impression that she has loads of natural talent, and this flat track on soft ground should suit ideally under Jack Kennedy. |
2:30 | Aintree | Crebilly | Jonjo O’Neill’s progressive young chaser lost no caste in defeat when second behind Shakemup’Arry in the Plate at the Festival, taking a long time to warm to his task but running on strongly up the hill. He remains with loads of scope to keep on improving over fences after just four career starts, and the emphasis on stamina over 3m1f in the mud should be his optimum conditions. |
3:05 | Aintree | Crambo | Fergal O’Brien’s improving hurdler was disappointing when well fancied for the Stayers hurdle at the Cheltenham festival (never looking at ease on the undulations/beaten before the straight), and the return to a flat track is expected to suit under Jonathan Burke. He looked a natural for this race when winning at Ascot over Christmas over three miles, and his smart turn of foot is likely to be a real asset after the last. |
4:00 | Aintree | Latenightpass | Aintree has always been on the agenda for this tough and genuine stayer, and he can give top female rider Gina Andrews a well deserved victory in the biggest betting race of the jumps season. He had a sighter over hurdles at Haydock in February to keep him ticking over, and comes into this freshened up and primed to run a big race (with the deep ground conditions perfect for him). |
