Saturday’s ITV cameras bring the best of the action from Haydock and Sandown, with fast ground assured as the dry summer weather continues across the country. Competitive handicaps are the order of the day, with excellent prize money on offer and decent field sizes as a result, while the Coral Eclipse at 3.35pm provides some top class Group 1 action for the purists (as the Derby winner City of Troy is sure to be one of the shortest priced favourites in the long history of this prestigious prize).
In this article:
HOLLOWAY BOY
Sandown 2.25 (UK time)
Karl Burke’s handicapper has run with promise on all three starts this season, and has optimum conditions here to snap a frustrating losing run (often strong in the market from whats now looks a very lenient mark). His latest fifth was hugely encouraging in a massive field for the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, and the stiff uphill finish at Sandown should play to his strengths under Sam James.
Odds: 7.00
LADY BOBA
Haydock 2.40 (UK time)
Ralph Beckett’s filly made a really promising seasonal reappearance last month over this course and distance, and is entitled to strip fitter for the outing. This Group 2 represents a jump up in class, but she travelled like a top class filly on that return (saw very little daylight when cruising), and can gain compensation here for her astute connections.
Odds: 5.00
Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:50 | Sandown | .APOLLO ONE | Peter Charalambous does well with a relatively small team of horses, and his stable star has run two blinders in defeat in a light campaign so far this summer (showing excellent early speed and typically finding generously for pressure). This stiffest of five furlongs should be ideal, and he could take plenty of passing if able to secure the lead against the far rail under Neil Callan. |
2:05 | Haydock | DRAMATIC STAR | William Haggas is an expert at nurturing gradual improvement from his stayers, and his unexposed sort looks to have been found an excellent opportunity at Haydock on Saturday. He was sent up to Hamilton to lose his maiden tag last month (hammered down to 4/9f), and this opening handicap mark looks on the generous side under the excellent Tom Marquand. |
2:25 | Sandown | HOLLOWAY BOY | Karl Burke’s handicapper has run with promise on all three starts this season, and has optimum conditions here to snap a frustrating losing run (often strong in the market from whats now looks a very lenient mark). His latest fifth was hugely encouraging in a massive field for the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, and the stiff uphill finish at Sandown should play to his strengths under Sam James. |
2:40 | Haydock | LADY BOBA | Ralph Beckett’s filly made a really promising seasonal reappearance last month over this course and distance, and is entitled to strip fitter for the outing. This Group 2 represents a jump up in class, but she travelled like a top class filly on that return (saw very little daylight when cruising), and can gain compensation here for her astute connections. |
3:00 | Sandown | CLOVE HITCH | Andrew Balding’s progressive performer created a deep impression when winning last time out at Newbury in a warm novice, and she can handle this jump up into listed company (with fast ground expected to suit over this stiff mile and loads more to come after just four career starts). The top class Ryan Moore is booked for the ride for the first time, which certainly increases confidence she can win again. |
3:15 | Haydock | CHILLINGHAM | Ed Bethell is very much a young trainer to follow up the ranks, and his handicapper served notice last time when finishing a creditable third in warm company. This valuable handicap should be run at a strong gallop from the stalls (with several confirmed frontrunners in the line up), and that should bring his proven stamina into play up the long straight under Kevin Stott. |
3:35 | Sandown | CITY OF TROY | Aidan O’Brien’s 3-y-o silenced the doubters in no uncertain style when landing hefty market confidence in the Derby last time out, and is likely to be extremely hard to beat here under Ryan Moore. He flopped in the 2000 Guineas when well fancied, but that blip is now firmly behind him, and the demands on stamina up the Sandown hill should definitely suit dropping back to 1m2f. |
