Some ultra competitive jumps action on ITV on Saturday, with the cameras covering the best of the action from Doncaster, Kelso and Newbury. Ground conditions are sure to be pretty testing after the wet weather continued across the country, with the big betting race of the afternoon likely to be the Greatwood Gold Cup at Newbury (2.00pm). Kelso stage their biggest meeting of the season, with excellent prize-money on offer sure to draw up some of the big southern yards.
In this article:
Gaye Legacy
Doncaster 3:10 (UK time)
Tom Symonds tenacious mare is a thoroughly likeable performer and progressive stayer who finds generously for pressure, and this extended three miles looks sure to suit ideally on the testing ground. She steps up in class here from handicaps to listed company, but the bridge is not too wide and the long Doncaster straight will bring that proven stamina into play under regular rider Ben Poste.
Odds: 7.00
Gustavian
Newbury 1:55 (UK time)
Anthony Honeyball’s frustrating handicapper has let down backers on numerous occasions, often making costly jumping errors, but he has a big engine when things do fall right and has conditions to suit here. He unseated Sam Twiston-Davies at the first when well backed at Kempton last weekend, but a clean round of jumping under Rex Dingle on soft ground here should see him go very close with conditions to suit.
Odds: 13.00
Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:20 | Newbury | Copperhead | Joe Tizzard’s veteran has been running really well in defeat all winter, and can gain reward for his consistency at Newbury on Saturday. He has been unable to dominate in recent starts which he prefers, and his chance would dramatically increase if the excellent 5lb claimer Freddie Gingell is able to seize the initiative from the tape. |
1:42 | Kelso | Ilanz | Anthony Charlton has done well since taking over from Milton Harris, and his progressive handicapper looked one to follow up the weights when making a winning seasonal reappearance in January. His freshness at this stage of the season should count for plenty, and the improving good to soft ground conditions likely at Kelso should hold no terrors. |
1:55 | Newbury | Gustavian | Anthony Honeyball’s frustrating handicapper has let down backers on numerous occasions, often making costly jumping errors, but he has a big engine when things do fall right and has conditions to suit here. He unseated Sam Twiston-Davies at the first when well backed at Kempton last weekend, but a clean round of jumping under Rex Dingle on soft ground here should see him go very close with conditions to suit. |
2:17 | Kelso | Jango Baie | Nicky Henderson’s progressive novice lost no caste in defeat when finishing a cracking second last time out, and holds standout form claims in this valuable Grade 2 prize. He remains open to loads more improvement over hurdles after just three career starts, and the intermediate 2m2f trip should suit under Nico de Boinville. |
2:35 | Doncaster | Tommy’s Oscar | Ann Hamilton’s stable star has been a real money-spinner over the years, and he has a good make up to swoop late at Doncaster on Saturday. The presence of a couple of confirmed frontrunners should bring his proven stamina into play up the long Doncaster straight, and Sean Quinlan is sure to patient on the consistent 9-y-o on soft ground that suits him well. |
2:50 | Kelso | Skycutter | Dan Skelton would not be the most regular visitor up to Scotland, and it looks significant that he sends up this improving handicapper (after an impressive win at Carlisle last time out/landing hefty market confidence in the process under a confident ride from rear). The promising claimer Tristan Durrell takes off a handy 3lb, and he will be looking to pounce up the long Kelso run-in, (with drying ground a big plus given how strongly he travels on the bridle). |
3:10 | Doncaster | Gaye Legacy | Tom Symonds tenacious mare is a thoroughly likeable performer and progressive stayer who finds generously for pressure, and this extended three miles looks sure to suit ideally on the testing ground. She steps up in class here from handicaps to listed company, but the bridge is not too wide and the long Doncaster straight will bring that proven stamina into play under regular rider Ben Poste. |
3:25 | Kelso | Elvis Mail | Nick Alexander’s chaser is a much more settled character these days, and has an excellent record at this course on soft ground over the last few seasons. He had excuses for a lesser effort when seventh in a hot Cheltenham handicap last time out (shaping better than the bare result out of his usual comfort zone), and his previous win over 3m2f at this track is solid form for the grade. |
3:40 | Doncaster | Certainly Red | Lydia Richard’s stayer has been building up to peak fitness this winter, and a repeat of his latest runner-up effort at Sandown would put him bang in contention for this ultra-competitive prize. He has won 4 of his 12 career starts over fences, and a strongly run race over this 3m2f trip should be ideal under regular rider Marc Goldstein. |
