There are 9 races on ITV on Saturday, with the cameras covering the best of the action from Newbury, Newmarket and Ripon. The big betting heat of the afternoon is likely to be the Great St Wilfred handicap at 2.50pm, with a decent field expected over the six furlong trip and excellent prize money on offer on Ripon’s biggest raceday of the season.
There is plenty of Group race action too for the purists, with the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes at 3.35pm looking sure to attract runners from all the top yards over the seven furlong trip, and the Geoffrey Freer at 2.30pm providing a stern test of stamina up the long Newbury straight (on ground that is sure to be extremely quick after the heatwave returned throughout the week in the UK).
In this article:
Dance Fever
Newbury 3:00 (UK time)
Clive Cox’s handicapper has won 4 of his 18 career starts so far, and caught the eye when a very unlucky third at Goodwood 17 days ago. He had his run stopped repeatedly when closing there, and should relish the flat long galloping Newbury straight under Adam Kirby (with a strong pace on the cards to set things up for his customary late charge from rear).
Odds: NA
Jumby
Newbury 3:35 (UK time)
Eve Johnson Houghton’s useful performer has been running superbly in defeat in top handicaps all summer until not landing a blow at Ascot in July (slow break and never a factor in a huge field). He is worth sticking with now as William Buick is back in the saddle (on board when he finished an excellent third in the Wokingham at the Royal meeting), and this Group 2 should be well within his compass if back to his very best.
Odds: NA

Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:20 | NEWBURY | ROGUE ROCKET | Tom Clover’s 3-y-o looked one to follow in handicaps when winning in style at Salisbury in June, and can be forgiven an expensive defeat when well backed to defy a penalty at Sandown next time out (muddling contest and never landed a blow from rear). |
1:55 | NEWBURY | FERRARI QUEEN | Charlie and Mark Johnston’s filly has impressed with her attitude to win both career starts so far at Doncaster and Kempton, and can handle a rise up to listed company at Newbury on Saturday. |
2:10 | NEWMARKET | ATLANTIS | John and Thady Gosden’s filly has improved run to run in a four race career to date, and this stiffer test of stamina now going handicapping promises to bring about even more progress under Frankie Dettori. |
2:30 | NEWBURY | SILENCE PLEASE | Andrew Balding’s useful mare has not been easy to place this summer, and comes into this on the back of a well beaten, non-staying sixth at Sandown over two miles. She had shaped well in defeat at Goodwood in April, and makes some appeal at a big price here now dropping back to 1m5f under David Probert. |
2:50 | RIPON | BLACKROD | Ed Bethell is enjoying a real breakthrough season, and he will fancy winning plenty of races with this useful sprinter who has recently arrived from Michael Dads. The form of his latest seventh in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot has worked out superbly, and he comes into this valuable handicap freshened up by 56 days on the sidelines. |
3:00 | NEWBURY | DANCE FEVER | Clive Cox’s handicapper has won 4 of his 18 career starts so far, and caught the eye when a very unlucky third at Goodwood 17 days ago. He had his run stopped repeatedly when closing there, and should relish the flat long galloping Newbury straight under Adam Kirby (with a strong pace on the cards to set things up for his customary late charge from rear). |
3:18 | NEWMARKET | STRIKE | Jonathan Portman’s sprinter never landed a blow from rear when gambled on at Salisbury last time out 21 days ago, but he shaped well in defeat and is worth another chance to snap his maiden tag at the twelfth time of asking (with Rob Hornby sure to be more positive). |
3:35 | NEWBURY | JUMBY | Eve Johnson Houghton’s useful performer has been running superbly in defeat in top handicaps all summer until not landing a blow at Ascot in July (slow break and never a factor in a huge field). He is worth sticking with now as William Buick is back in the saddle (on board when he finished an excellent third in the Wokingham at the Royal meeting), and this Group 2 should be well within his compass if back to his very best. |
