The Arc Tips – Best Bet
John Gosden’s top class mare has won a remarkable 15 of her 18 career starts, including landing memorable wins in the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe in the 2017 and 2018 renwals. She missed out narrowly for a historic three timer in 2019, arguably doing far too much too soon in really deep testing ground, and is strongly fancied to gain compensation here under regular rider Frankie Dettori.
The Arc Tips – Value Bet
John Gosden’s prolific stayer has been rather overlooked in the market for this valuable Group 1 after suffering a rare defeat in a trial at this track in September, but a slow run crawl was little use to him that day and he should relish the likely blistering gallop in this ultra competitive renewal.

How To Bet On The Arc
While the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is one of the biggest racing events in the world, betting on the 2020 running of the race will be the first for many punters. So what are the keys for betting on the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe? Our racing expert Stephen Harris shares his five key considerations for deciding on your own Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe tips.
1. The Impact of the Draw
Although the effect of the draw is usually more relevant in sprint contests, it can still have a huge bearing over middle distances particularly in big fields at Paris Longchamp. Traditionally a low draw has been an advanatge in the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, with the majoity of winners since 2000 drawn in single figures.
This can be explained by getting a good early pitch against the rail, rather than those drawn out wide in the car park who either have to be dropped right out and ridden for luck, or be rushed up early to try and get an early handy position.
2. Jockey Experience
Siding with experience can pay dividends in a Group 1 race of this nature, with jockeys like Dettori and Soumillion having decades of race riding knowledge that can count for plenty when split second decision making is called for.
The one negative about this theory is that the market often overreacts to a big name jockey being on board (particularly on the PMU).
3. The Ground
The 2019 renewal of this race produced a major shcok as the unconsidered mudlark Waldegeist revelled in the atrocious ground conditons, and punters should keep a close eye on the weather through the day and watch the early races on the card to discern how the track is riding.
Certain runners will prefer better ground to be seen at their best, with both Love and Enable best suited by good ground, while rain and easier conditons could bring stayers like Stradivarius firmly into the reckoning.
4. Bookmaker Offers
As with all the major races, bookmakers fall over themselves to attract business and this can mean some terrific value on offer for the punter.
It is always worth shopping around, taking the best price on offer for your selection, and perhaps play each-way with layers offering enhanced place terms or cash back offers.
5. Check the PMU
The Pari-Mutuel (French tote) is extremely strong, with excellent liquidity on days like Arc day at Longchamp, and is well worth checking out for the excellent value often available.
It is best to look away from the obvious big names (particularly if they are a hyped up French runner ridden by one of their top riders), and there can be some terrificly big prices away from the obvious (most UK bookmakers accept bets on the PMU).
Betting on the Arc UK Runners
Each year a number of horses from the Uk enter the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. As the race approaches, our racing expert Stephen Harris has taken a look at the top three chances for UK horses at this years Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
|Love||A O’Brien||Non Runner|
|Magical||A O’Brien||Non Runner|
Odds as at 10am October 2nd 2020. Odds may now differ
Aidan O’Brien’s filly has thrived this summer, winning all threee starts in terrific style and having no problems at all when landing short odds in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks at York in August.
She is entitled to maximum respect here given her brilliant connections and fast improving profile, but does look underpriced on actual form in the book (currently the 13/8f in the early market).
Love has been withdrawn from the Arc
This battle hardened performer has now won 12 of his 25 career starts to date, and posted a terrificly tenacious effort to deny the 4/7f Ghaiyyath in the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown in September.
He struggled in the conditons when only fifth behind Waldegeist and Enable in 2019, and would appreciate conditions to stay on the faster side if he is to get any closer in 2020.
Magical has been withdrawn from the Arc
Aidan O’Brien’s 3-y-o colt showed a real liking for Longchamp when winning his trial impressively here last month, quickening up smartly up the inside under a confident ride from the red hot P C Boudot.
He might be missed in the market here as jockey bookings would suggest him to be unfancied, but that could be a mistake and he looks the best of the bigger priced runners.
History of the Arc
This prestigious Group 1 has a rich past dating back to 1920, and brings together the very best middle distance performers from around the world.
The race is run at Paris Longchamp on the first Sunday in October, and has produced some of the most memorable finishes in the history of flat turf racing. Run over the Derby trip of 1m4f, all the different international formlines make this a fiendishly difficult puzzle to solve, and there have been more than the fair share of shocks over the years (with Waldgeist at 16/1 in 2019 the latest).
Some legends of the sport have established their hero-status in this contest, with Treve in 2013 and 2014 making history to the delight of the local crowd. In recent times Enable has lit up the occasion, winning twice in 2017 and 2018 before a rather unlucky (and expensive) defeat in deep ground in 2019.
