Close Brothers Mares Hurdle Tips - Cheltenham 2021

Mares Hurdle Tips 2021 – Day 1, 15:40

This Grade 1 Mares hurdle has been dominated by some top class Willie Mullins runners in the past, and it will be very significant to see who he targets at the 2021 renewal. At the moment both Concertista and Honeysuckle are entered up, though they may well avoid each other with alternative races both suitable later in the week.

Cheltenham Mares Hurdle 2021 Preview

Willie Mullins always has a very strong hand in all the mares races at the festival, and the light betting on the lead up to this Grade 1 Close Brothers Mares hurdle has been dominated by his progressive Concertista (currently a best priced 5/4f).

She has won 3 of her 7 starts so far over hurdles and sets an extremely high standard for her rivals to aim at, with proven Cheltenham form in the book (winner of the Grade 2 Mares hurdle at the 2020 Festival) and more improvement in the tank.

Her main danger is likely to be Dan Skelton’s ultra tough Roksana, who has returned better than ever this winter with a couple of hard on the bridle successes against inferior rivals, and she always gives her running regardless of the circumstances.

  • 9 of the last 12 winners were 5,6 or 7 years of age
  • 9 of the last 12 winners won on their last race previous to Cheltenham
  • 7 of the last 12 winners had raced at least 1 previously at Cheltenham
  • 11 of the last 12 winners had raced at least 5 times over hurdles

Mares Hurdle Tips 2021

Concertista, Mares Hurdle Tip #1

Willie Mullins classy mare stormed into the minds of the public with a devastating win at the 2020 Festival, landing the Mares Grade 2 hard on the bridle under a confident ride from Daryl Jacob. She has returned as good as ever with two wins in Eire this winter before Christmas, and seems sure to keep imporving after just 7 runs over hurdles so far.

Roksana, Mare Hurdle Tip #2

Mares Hurdle Winners

A race farmed by Willie Mullins over the years, with his supermare Quevega barely coming off the bridle to land this Grade 1 an incredible six times on the trot between 2009 and 2014. She was always one of the bankers of the Festival for the legions of Irish punters, and in recent years they have seen some high class displays from the likes of Vroum Vroum Mag, Benie des Dieuux and Hineysuckle in 2020.
