Coral Cup Tips - Cheltenham 2021

Coral Cup 2021 Tips – Day 2, 14:30

A ferociously competitive handicap that sets a real challenge every year for punters (currently the bookmakers offer 16/1 the field), and stakes are best kept to a minimum (unless you can find a layer offering 6+ places for each-way betting purposes). The late market moves can be revealing, and the ability to stay thoroughly is always a big asset in a race run at a blistering gallop from the tape.

Coral Cup 2021 Preview

One of the hardest handicaps of the week, with over £42,000 on offer and a huge field assured. Formlines from Britain and Ireland are notoriously hard to compare, with the English handicapper usually adding on a few pounds to the marks of the Irish runners (very often in the past that has not been anywhere near enough).

The ante-post market has been quiet, with 7-1 the field available for looking and no standout candidate emerging (and plenty of the front end like The Shunter having multiple entries across the four days of the festival). Nicky Henderson’s Monte Christo impressed when winning at Kempton in December, and has been kept fresh for this race since, with decent ground ideal and the strong pace sure to help him settle in the early stages.

Coral Cup 2021 Trends

  • 9 of the last 12 winners were 5, 6 or 7 years of age
  • 5 of the last 12 winners won on their last race prior to Cheltenham
  • 9 of the last 12 winners had raced at least 1 time previously at Cheltenham
  • 10 of the last 12 winners had raced at least 6 times over hurdles

Coral Cup Cheltenham 2021 Tips

Monte Cristo, Coral Cup Tip #1

Nicky Henderson’s handicapper is unxposed after just four runs in the UK for his astute connections, and he impressed when landing a competitive Kempton handicap at 25/1 on Boxing Day. There is plenty more imporvement to come and he has already proven that testing ground suits when winning at Auteuil in October 2019.

Grand Roi, Coral Cup Tip #2

This 5-y-o seems an improved performer since arriving with Gordon Elliott from Nicky Henderson, and he remains with plenty of potential into handicaps after just five career runs over hurdles. The right money has been around in the ante-post market over the last few weeks, and he should relish the big field/strong run race on drying ground for the first time.

Coral Cup Winners

A red hot 2m5f handicap, with a maximum field size assured and a strong pace from the tape making this a stiff test of stamina up the final hill. Nicky Henderson has done especially well in this race, winning it three times since Whisper in 2014, and the well backed Dame de Compagnie landed a wholesale gamble in the JP McManus silks in 2020 (given a masterclass from out the back by the now retired Barry Geraghty).
