Weatherbys Champion Bumper Tips - Cheltenham 2021

Champion Bumper 2021 Tips – Day 2, 16:50

The Grade 1 Champion bumper is always a fascinating race to watch with an eye on the future, and the reputation of the very expensive Sir Gerhard is sure to be tested in a huge field of unexposed and talented rivals. He has been well supported since winning so impressively on his Rules debut for Gordon Elliott in deep ground at Navan in December, and connections certainly know what it takes to win this prestigious prize over the years.

Cheltenham Champion Bumper 2021 Preview

One of the most informative races of the entire four days at the Festival, with the best raw young horses from Britain and Ireland locking horns. Trouble in running can play a part with a big field of inexperienced horses racing on ground that is likely to be the quickest they have yet to run on, and punters are advised to play to absolutely minimum stakes.

The top Irish yards traditionally dominate proceedings, and this year has the look of a real match if the early betting market is any guide. Both Sir Gerhard and Kilcruit have attracted strong support in the last few weeks, with the bookmakers best offers under 2/1 for both (and 12/1 bar the pair for looking).

Champion Bumper 2021 Trends

  • 11 of the last 12 winners were 5 or 6 years of age
  • 12 of the last 12 winners won their last race prior to Cheltenham
  • 2 of the last 12 winners had raced at least 1 time previously at Cheltenham

Champion Bumper 2021 Betting Tips

Sir Gerhard, Champion Bumper Tip #1

Gordon Elliott’s 6-y-o has a big reputation and has barely come off the bridle to win his two bumpers so far in Eire (landing hety cash down to long odds on at Down Royal and Navan). He has already attracted some warm cash in the ante-post markets and seems sure to be one of the Irish bankers over the four days.

Kilcruit, Champion Bumper #2

Willie Mullins always assembles a crack team for the Festival bumper, and this 6-y-o looked a high class recruit when winning smoothly on the bridle at Navan in December.

Champion Bumper Winners

The Weatherbys Champion bumper is a race that always attracts some of the most expensive and highly regarded young horses from Britain and Ireland, with luck in running often playing a part and a big field usually meaning this can be quite a rough and messy conteat as they swiong for home round the tight final turn at Cheltenham. The top Eire yards have predictably dominated, though not always with their seeming first strings on jockey bookings, and in 2020 the unconsidered Ferny Hollow sprang something of a surprise at 11/1 for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend.
