Cheltenham Tips Gold Cup Preview

Irish trainers dominated the 2021 Cheltenham Festival from start to finish, and they seem to hold all the aces for the 2022 renewal of the big race of the entire week (due off Friday 18th March at 3.05pm). The standout contender at this stage is Henry de Bromhead’s A Plus Tard, who shortened up dramatically in the ante-post lists after a devastating return to land the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November.

He is now a top priced 7/2f with the bookmakers, despite suffering a narrow defeat at the hands of Galvin in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown in December (jockey error, doing too much too soon). The shortest priced UK trained runner is Nicky Henderson’s Chantry House (16/1), but he failed to impress when scrambling home of Festival trials day and would need to jump a lot more fluently to take a hand.

A PLUS TARD

Henry de Bromhead and Racheal Blackmore have teamed up to brilliant effect in Ireland over the last few seasons, and this rapidly progressive chaser holds standout claims of winning the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup. He has now won 5 of his 13 starts over fences, finishing a cracking second to Minella Indo in the 2021 contest, and returning better than ever when not off the bridle at Haydock (well backed 11/10f and eased home alone under a very confident ride). That form may not be the strongest (main rival Bristol du Mai past his best and never comfortable on the good ground), but he remains with loads of potential over this stamina sapping trip and lost no caste at all in defeat when touched off by Galvin in December at Leopardstown.

Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup Winners

The best race of the week, known as the Blue Riband of NH racing and dating back to 1924. The winners of this Grade 1 contest is a roll call of legends of the jumping game. Golden Miller won the race a remarkable five times between 1932 and 1936, while Pat Taafe has four wins as a jockey (three on Arkle between 1964-66) and one on Fort Leney in 1968. Kauto Star and Denman are the highest quality winners in more recent times for Paul Nicholls, and the Willie Mullins trained Al Boum Photo was very popular with Irish punters after memorable wins in 2019 and 2020. Henry de Bromhead’s dominance of the 2021 Festival continued when his Minella Indo took the big prize under Jack Kennedy, jumping more fluently than usual to see off A Plus Tard up the hill.
