Stephen Harris’ Gordon Stakes Preview

A valuable Group 3 with £175,000 in prize money and a small but select field of middle distance performers from the top yards attracted. This adds a touch of quality to the card, on a day dominated by top class handicappers, and there is usually an active ante-post betting market on the run up to the event.

Gordon Stakes Tips 2020

Al Aasy, Gordon Stakes Tip #1

William Haggas’s progressive colt has only raced so far at Newmarket, winning his last two starts on easy ground and handling the step up to Group class comfortably last time out. Faster ground promises to suit him well given how smoothly he travels on the bridle, and Jim Crowley will be looking to cut these down late on.

Subjectivist, Gordon Stakes Tip #2

Mark Johnston always targets this meeting with some up and coming 3-y-o’s, and this exciting prospect looks well worth the step up in class to Group 3 company after impressing last time at Hamilton in a fair listed prize.

This Group 3 is named after the Duke of Gordon, one of the dukedoms held by the Duke of Richmond, and was established in 1902. This can be an excellent trial for the St Leger held at Doncaster in the Autumn, with no fewer than nine horses winning both races in total. In 2019 Nayef Road continued an excellent week for Mark Johnston to land the prize, battling on bravely in a blanket finish under Silvestre de Sousa.
