Stephen Harris’ Queen Anne Stakes Preview

This opening event was originally established in 1840, that was originally named the Trial Stakes. In 1930 it was renamed the Queen Anne Stakes (after the founder of Ascot racecourse).

In 1971 it was granted Group 3 status, becoming a Group 2 in 1984 and finally a Group 1 in 2003. 2020 saw the globetrotting Circus Maximus take the prize back to Ireland for Aidan O’Brien, and there is sure to be a strong international entry taking on the likely short-priced favourite Palace Pier in 2021.

Palace Pier, Queen Anne Stakes Tip

John Gosden’s high class colt has now won 7 of his 8 career starts, and has barely come off the bridle in winning both starts so far this season. He is best on good fast ground (only defeat came on testing ground here in October), and is confidently expected to get the meeting off to a flying start for punters under the ageless Frankie Dettori.
