Which Bookmaker is the Best at Sports Coverage?
Every punter has their favoured betting sites. Whether it’s because they offer the best odds, have an impressive app, or offer live streaming, people have their favourites. But it’s also important to consider which sports are covered. Whether you’re a fan of winter sports or WWE, it’s important to remember that not every bookmaker offers odds on every sport.
Therefore, a bookmaker comparison is needed. We looked at 25* online UK bookmakers to see if they offered odds on over 50** different categories. The findings were telling with some bookmakers impressing and others falling behind. All data was collected during the United Kingdom on 17 March 2019 and may vary depending on time, date, and location.
Following sports have been tested:
|American Football||Athletics||Australian Football||Badminton||Bandy|
|Baseball||Basketball||Beach Soccer||Beach Volleyball||Biathlon|
|Horse Racing||Ice Hockey||MMA||Motor Racing||Netball|
|Rugby Union||Ski Jumps||Skiing||Snooker||Squash|
Bookmaker Comparison: Popular Sports Coverage
It’s no surprise that some sports are far more popular than others with punters. You’d expect every bookmaker to offer odds on them but there was, however, a surprise to see how few sports fit into that category. Just 12/55 sports were available to bet on using every bookmaker on the list. This statistic shows just how stark the difference is between various odds providers and why a bookmaker comparison is needed.
The 12 sports in question were: Australian Football, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Cycling, Darts, Football, Golf, Motor Racing, Rugby Union, Snooker, and Tennis. There were also several events which were offered by the vast majority of the 25 bookmakers including American Football, Entertainment, Gaelic Games, Greyhounds, Horse Racing, Ice Hockey, MMA, and Rugby League.
These findings are interesting because they show just how few sports are universally available across the various UK bookmakers. The number of sports covered varies quite a deal by bookmaker but it’s a surprise to see that they have just 12 in common. It’s a safe assumption that the vast majority of bets are made on these 12 categories alone but variety is more important to some bookmakers than others.
Bookmaker Comparison: The Best Bookmakers for Sports Covered
We’ve looked at the most popular sports but what about a bookmaker comparison for sports covered? Well, there was quite a big difference between the odds-providers on this list. Our research found that Coral and Unibet were at the top of the list, with each bookmaker offering odds on 39 different sports.
888Sport was just behind on 38 while Bet365, LeoVegas, Energy Bet, and NetBet all had at least 36 sports covered. Naturally, the peer-to-peer sports betting exchange site, Matchbook covered the fewest sports but the gap between the other bookmakers was as big as 14 different categories.
Bookmaker Comparison: The Best Bookmakers for Team Sports
Teamwork makes the dream work. It’s true in life just as much as in sport which is why so many punters love the collaboration of team sports. The most popular sports on the planet are almost all team-based so it’s no surprise that a bookmaker comparison shows how many betting sites follow suit.
Some bookmakers are certainly a bit better at it than others. Based on our findings, Coral came out on top by offering odds on 22 different team sports. There are another three sites which could be considered amongst the best bookmakers for team sports with Energy Bet, Bet365, and Bet At Home all offering odds on at least 20 team sports.
Bookmaker Comparison: The Best Bookmakers for Individual Sports
Some sportspeople prefer to work alone which is where individual sports come in. From golf to MMA, punters love backing their favourite personalities but what are the best bookmakers for individual sports? Well, a small group of odds-providers have drifted away from the chasing pack.
Our research found that the best bookmakers for individual sports were Bet365, Unibet, and 888Sport with all three sites offering odds on 17 different events. Coral, LeoVegas, and NetBet were just behind them on 16 with the majority of bookmakers offering between nine and 13. Non-team sports allow individuals to stand out from the pack and the same can be said for bookmakers.
Bookmaker Comparison: The Best Bookmakers for Unconventional Sports
Not everyone enjoys betting on Football, Golf, and Tennis. Some people prefer to wager on more unconventional sports so it’s good to have a bookmaker comparison for these niche activities. For example, Coral was the only bookmaker which offered odds on Beach Volleyball, while Sportingbet was the only place you could bet on Swimming. Some other sports could be bet on by a handful of bookmakers including Ski Jumping, Squash, and the Olympics. Although, that would certainly change as we get closer to Tokyo 2020.
Bookmaker Comparison: Conclusion
It’s important to create a bookmaker comparison like this when it comes to sports coverage. Every bookmaker is different and this research has shown that each one offers a different selection of sports. Whether you enjoy betting on the more popular sports like Football and Tennis or prefer placing bets on Sumo Wrestling and Futsal, you will now be better equipped to decide which bookmaker is the right choice for you.
