Ajax vs Getafe Prediction
Ajax followed up their 2-0 loss to Getafe in the Europa League in the worst possible way – suffering a 1-0 defeat at 9th-placed SC Heracles Almelo at the weekend. It was Ajax’s fourth defeat of the season in the Eredivisie, and reduced their lead over 2nd placed AZ Alkmaar to three points.
Prior to the defeat to Getafe, Ajax had lost just one game in nine in 2020, with seven wins. Now, unless Ajax can raise their level vs Getafe in the replay in Amsterdam, they are looking at three-straight defeats, and elimination from European football.
Getafe quite rightly earned rave reviews for their 2-0 win over Ajax in the Europa League last week, and for many neutral soccer fans it was an introduction to the team that has gate-crashed the established order in La Liga this season, spending much of it among the top-four, and look destined to earn a Champions League spot.
However, Getafe were brought down to earth with a bump at the weekend when they were comprehensively taken apart and beaten 3-0 at home by rivals Sevilla, the team they had edged out of the top-four. That result left Getafe back in fifth place in La Liga, with Sevilla now up to fourth, level on 43 points with Atletico Madrid.
Ajax vs Getafe Recent Meetings
Last week’s first leg of the Europa League Last 32 knockout stages turned out to be a one-sided display of domination by the then third-best team in La Liga. Goals from Getafe’s Brazilian duo of Deyverson (37′) and Kenedy (90’+3′) were enough to give the little team from the Madrid suburbs a 2-0 home win in their Coliseum Alfonso Pérez stadium.
Ajax vs Getafe Stats & Analysis
Last weekend’s Europa League first leg outcome was a rude awakening for Ajax, last season’s Champions league semi-finalists, and a team that great things were expected of this season. The Dutch side had the bulk of possession (65%) but could only muster two shots at goal, with neither on target. By comparison, Getafe had 11 shots with four on target and were unlucky not to win by an even more decisive scoreline.
Can the Dutch legends turn things around in their Johan Cruyff Arena in front of 55,000 rabid Ajax fans? They will need to score three goals without reply to guarantee safe passage to the next round of the competition. There has been some speculation that Ajax have no respect for the Europa League, but as they reached the final as recently as 2017 – losing to Manchester United – that would seem unfounded.
Ajax have lost just once at home in the Eredivisie, but were beaten by Valencia and Chelsea in Amsterdam during the UCL group stage. Getafe’s away record in La Liga is W5 D3 L4, and they have won two and lost one of their away games in the Europa League, so they travel well.
Ajax vs Getafe Bets
Whilst Ajax will most likely win this game, they will also concede, as Getafe are a team that score goals, home and away. Expect a nervy Ajax to concede early to Getafe, effectively going 4-0 down due to the away goals rule, and while they will score twice themselves to win the game, it won’t be nearly enough, and Getafe will progress to the Last 16.
