(HT 1-2)

The Champions League quarter-final second legs take place this week. Scott Thornton brings you his Aston Villa vs PSG prediction preview ahead of their encounter.

The Villains have it all to do. They find themselves 3-1 down after the first leg at the Parc des Princes. Unai Emery’s men have shown they are capable of beating anybody at Villa Park this season but overcoming a two-goal deficit looks a tall order.

PSG struggled in the league phase of the competition but have been in swashbuckling form since then. Luis Enrique’s side have beaten Liverpool, who were the favourites to win the Champions League at the time. They can break more English hearts on Tuesday night.

Aston Villa vs PSG  Prediction: Les Parisiens to Pick Up Where They Left Off

Europe, Champions League, Tuesday, April 15th, 20:00 (UK)

PSG don’t need to win on the night in order to go through but we are backing them to get the job done in style. Luis Enrique has the players at his disposal to be lethal on the counter so we are backing the visitors to win on the 1×2 market here. BETSiE agrees, projecting that Les Parisiens will score 0.4 goals more than their opponents.

Aston Villa struggled to get to grips with the game when the teams squared off in the Parc des Princes. The home side kept 75% possession and racked up a total of 29 shots. PSG were able to consistently win the ball high up the pitch and quash the majority of Villa’s counters. Emery’s men took a surprise lead in the 35th minute but Les Parisiens never really looked troubled.

The loss of Kylian Mbappe should have made PSG a less formidable attacking outfit but their new-look forward line looks menacing. The acquisition of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January has added another dimension. The Georgian has three goals and two assists in his last four games for club and country. Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele also looked lively in the first leg. The trio also have the necessary pace to hurt Villa when they leave space in behind the defence. Dembele ranks in the top 1% of forwards for non-penalty goals across Europe’s top five leagues in the last 12 months.

Les Parisiens have now lost just one of their last 30 competitive matches. Over that period, PSG have scored an average of 2.93 goals per game and conceded just 0.87. The solitary defeat was against Liverpool. Enrique’s side accumulated 1.51 more xG than the Reds in that game despite the 1-0 defeat. They were able to make amends by beating Slot’s men at Anfield and we are backing them to get the job done on English soil once again.

Aston Villa are also in fine fettle but PSG represent a step up in class. The loss in Paris was their only defeat in nine competitive matches.  This will be just the second time in that run of matches where the Villains have been priced at odds of 3.00 or greater, the other was the reverse fixture.

Villa last participated in this competition in 1983. They have a rich history, lifting the trophy in 1982. However, the modern-day team lacks experience playing against Europe’s elite and it should be their undoing as they attempt to claw their way back into this one.

Aston Villa vs PSG Injuries, Team News and Possible Lineups

Matty Cash had his hands full in the first leg and committed several fouls but he is likely to start once again. Leon Bailey is the only injury doubt for Aston Villa. Marcus Rashford could lead the attack once again with Rogers and Ramsey starting on the wings. Unai Emery needs to inspire a masterful performance from his players.

PSG had the weekend off. They have already wrapped up the Ligue 1 title so their focus would have solely been on this fixture since the first leg. Enrique will have been delighted with what he saw from his players last week. Desire Doue’s heroic display should be enough for him to get the nod ahead of Bradley Barcola.

Aston Villa possible starting lineup:
Martinez; Cash, Torres, Konsa, Digne; Kamara, Tielemans, McGinn; ROgers, Ramsey, Raashford

PSG  possible starting lineup:
Donnarumma, Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Vitinha, Neves, Ruiz; Doue, Kvaratskhelia, Dembele

Match OPTA Stats: Villa’s Woes Against French Opposition

  • Paris SG have averaged 11.2 high turnovers per game in the UEFA Champions League this season; their most in a single edition on record (since 2012-13). They’ve also recorded 36 shot-ending high turnovers in 2024-25, which is more than they had in the previous three editions combined (28).
  • Aston Villa have lost three of their four games against French sides in European competition under Unai Emery, with all three of those defeats coming in succession (1-2 v Lille, 0-1 v Monaco, and 1-3 v Paris SG). Their one victory did come in the only one of these four played at Villa Park, however, beating Lille 2-1 in April 2024 (UEFA Conference League).
  • Paris SG have four different players who’ve been directly involved in 5+ goals in the UEFA Champions League this season, in Ousmane Dembélé (9), Achraf Hakimi (6), Bradley Barcola (6) and Désiré Doué (5). They’ve never previously had more players do so in a single edition, while they have three players currently on four goal involvements (Gonçalo Ramos, Fabián Ruiz, and Nuno Mendes).
