Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid Prediction

Current Champions League holders Liverpool face a tough task in progressing to the next stage as they welcome Atletico Madrid to Anfield. Can the Premier League leaders overcome their 1-0 deficit? Let’s take a look at what the stats are suggesting for this one.

Recent Form

Having enjoyed an incredible season, Liverpool’s form has dropped somewhat. The Premier League leaders have lost three of their last four in all competitions, a run that began with defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first leg.

They did return to winning ways at the weekend, with victory over Bournemouth in the Premier League. Can that win inspire them to overturn the 1-0 loss at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium?

Since the 1-0 first leg win, Atletico have drawn two and won one in La Liga. Victory over Villareal was followed by draws away at Espanyol and at home to Sevilla.

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid Recent Meetings

Previous meetings between these two sides have tended to be close affairs. Prior to the first leg in February, these two sides had met each other four times. Meeting in the Europa League in 2010, Atletico Madrid enjoyed a 1-0 win at home, before defeat at Anfield by two goals to one.

Previous to that tie, these two sides had met in the Champions League in 2008. Both games finished in 1-1 draws.

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid Stats & Analysis

Liverpool have suffered a couple of injury blows, one being the injury to goalkeeper Alisson. The Brazilian is unlikely to return before April. Xherdan Shaqiri is also missing from this one. We could see the return of captain Jordan Henderson, though, with Andy Robertson also likely to return.

As for Atletico Madrid, Thomas Lemar is unlikely to return from injury in time to play a part at Anfield. The winger has been out since February with a muscle injury.

Liverpool’s form has been fantastic this season, particularly on home soil. In their domestic league, Liverpool have won all 15 games at Anfield, scoring 40 goals in the process.

Atletico’s away form doesn’t make for such good reading. Only winning three of their 13 games at home in the league, Atletico have drawn seven of them, scoring 11 goals.

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid Bets

Liverpool are favourites to win the game, priced at 1.57. The Atletico win is at 6.50, with the draw at 3.80.

While Liverpool are favourites to win the game outright, Atletico are favourites to progress to the next round. To qualify, Atletico have odds of 1.66, with Liverpool 2.10.

Of course, Atletico will progress with a draw of any kind. The Spanish side are famous for their organisational skills and tough defence. While Liverpool have been in great goalscoring form all season, they couldn’t find a way through the Atletico defence in the first leg. Under 2.5 goals in the game is priced at 1.80.
