The 2024 Copa America is underway and our very own South American expert Nathan Joyes has put together his early bird Peru vs Canada prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.
Peru held Chile to a 0-0 draw in their opening round, while Canada put in a solid performance as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against the world champions. If either nation wants to qualify, three points are a must here.

Many analysts focused on how Argentina spurned plenty of opportunities in front of goal against Canada, but plenty of credit has to be given to the CONCACAF nation.
With four corners and ten shots, Canada didn’t simply roll over as many expected, and instead delivered a performance which will have convinced many they can get out of Group A.
Goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau pulled off some big saves, while centre-back pairing Derek Cornelius and Moise Bombito were impressive and were not intimidated by Argentina’s attacking presence.
Although Canada lacks “big” names, captain Alphonso Davies, Cycle Larin and Jonathan David are all top players at this level. Peru don’t have anyone to match their quality, and although they managed to hold Chile, it’ll be a huge surprise if they manage to keep two clean sheets in their opening Copa America matches.
With Argentina out the way, Canada will be confident they can claim all three points against a struggling CONMEBOL nation.
Although I’ve just stated Peru will be fortunate to keep a clean sheet, it doesn’t look likely they’ll trouble Canada’s Crepeau after his impressive performance against the current holders. Portland Timbers goalkeeper made eight saves across the entire match.
Peru, on the other hand, had managed four shots against Chile, with just two finding the target in round one. Having scored just one goal in their six World Cup qualifiers to date, Peru continued their trend of lacking creativity in the final third.
As mentioned, centre-backs Cornelius and Bombito were rather strong against Argentina, and only came undone due to incredible, quick play from the world champions. They’ll face no one of the sort on Tuesday evening.
Canada will need to show more going forward than they did on that occasion, but will likely have opportunities. Peru can frustrate teams, as we saw against Chile, which adds another edge to the bet.
Although Canada should score, Peru doesn’t look likely just yet.
Lille’s prolific striker bagged himself an impressive 26 goals across all competitions and Canada will need him to be his usual self if they are to remain in the tournament.
The 24-year-old’s chances were restricted against Argentina, but that’s no real surprise. He did have a shot, but it failed to test Emiliano Martinez’s hands. However, against a far weaker opponent, opportunities should fall his way.
Chile had ten shots against Peru, finishing with 60% possession and an xG of 1.21. Canada should dominate the ball against their CONMEBOL opponents, and that should see David find his way through on goal.
Just shy of evens for David to hit the target just once looks a cracking bet.
Peru vs Canada Prediction odds via bet365 as at 17:00, June 23rd, 2024. Odds may now differ.
A real lack of attacking threat is likely to end Peru’s short stay in the 2024 Copa America. Cagliari’s 34-year-old Gianluca Lapadula only scored three in 23 in the last campaign, while Edison Flores is perhaps not good enough at this level.Paolo Guerrero came on against Chile and became the oldest outfielder ever to play in the tournament (40) but offered next to nothing. His time in football looks to be coming to an end.
Canada’s strikers Larin and David are both capable of winning matches on their own and either could prove to be the difference in what is predicted to be a low-scoring affair.
Peru possible starting lineup:
Gallese; Callens, Zambrano, Araujo, Advincula, Quispe, Cartagena, Pena, Polo, Lapadula, Flores
Canada possible starting lineup:
