How Croatia Qualified for Euro 2020
Croatia had a solid qualification campaign. They made it out of Group E, topping a tricky group that included some good sides. It all started so well for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finalists. They beat Azerbaijan before suffering a surprise defeat against Hungary. They recovered with victory over Wales and didn’t look back. Croatia remained unbeaten for the rest of the qualification campaign as they secured top spot with 17 points from eight matches.
It’s the fifth successive European Championships tournament that Croatia have reached. They haven’t got past the quarter-finals in any of their five matches but will be hoping to do this time around.
How Scotland Qualified for Euro 2020
Scotland did things the hard way. They were drawn in a tough group alongside a strong Russia side and this unstoppable Belgium side. They lost all four games against the two nations as well as one against Kazakhstan back in March 2019. Fortunately, they won the other five and performed well in the Nations League to secure a place in the play-offs.
They were drawn against Israel in the semi-finals and won that one on penalties after a 0-0 draw. It was 1-1 after 90 minutes in the final against a strong Serbia side. It went all the way to penalties and Scotland won that one 5-4 on the night.
Croatia v Scotland Stats & Analysis
Croatia and Scotland have met five times since the turn of the millennium. Scotland haven’t lost any of them with three draws and two wins. Croatia lost twice back in 2013 during the FIFA World Cup qualification, suffering a 2-0 defeat on their last trip to Hampden Park.
A similar result here would go down well in Scotland but they face tough opposition. Croatia reached the World Cup Final in 2018 and showed their quality en route to this tournament. The stats argue that Croatia performed a lot better than their results suggested. They had an xG of 1.98 which was amongst the highest in the qualification campaign. The issue for them is conceding too many goals. Both teams scored in 75% of Croatia’s matches, only Serbia and Kosovo had a higher figure.
Croatia v Scotland Bets
But they’re still the favourites to win this match. Croatia are 11/10 to secure all three points and get their first ever win against Scotland. A draw is 12/5 and Steve Clarke’s men are out at 11/4. It’s 4/5 for a Scotland win or a draw and for their unbeaten record against Croatia to continue.
We may see some goals here. Both teams to score is a good bet whenever Croatia are involved after their performances in qualifying at 1/1. Scotland averaged 3.08 total match goals per game in their qualification campaign and Croatia’s figure was 3.00. Over 2.5 total match goals is a tempting 11/8.
