Leicester City host Slavia Prague in the second leg of this Europa League tie. The sides drew 0-0 in the reverse fixture and everything is riding on this one. The Foxes were left a little frustrated with that draw but will have high hopes for this match. A place in the last 16 is on the line for whichever side wins this match. Read more
Leicester are in a good spot right now. The Foxes have lost just one match since mid-December and secured impressive victories over Liverpool and Chelsea along the way. Slavia Prague have dominated in their league. The Czech team have lost just one of their last 20 matches in all competitions and that came in the Europa League.
That first leg match in Prague was the first ever meeting between these two clubs. That was hardly a surprise considering how rarely Leicester have taken part in European competition. But Brendan Rodgers’ men did well and were unlucky not to come away with more from the match. The 0-0 draw left them disappointed after creating the better chances.
The first leg didn’t quite live up to the billing. Neutrals were hoping for goals considering the group stage records of both sides. Slavia Prague had at least three total match goals in five of their six group stage fixtures and an average of 3.50. That all changed with the 0-0 draw that also eroded Leicester’s exciting record. They averaged 3.17 total match goals in Europe before the goalless draw.
But the Foxes will be eager to get back as the home team. They won all three of the group stage matches at the King Power Stadium and they did so quite comfortably. Leicester didn’t concede a goal in any of their three fixtures. They scored an average of 3.00 goals in each of their three matches.
But that excellent home form isn’t just restricted to the Europa League. The Foxes were excellent in front of their fans when they took part in the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League. They won four and drew one of their five matches and conceded just two goals in the process. The highlights of that European run included wins over Sevilla and Porto and a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid.
The Foxes will aim to blow their opponents away in the first half here. Leicester City have one of the best first-half records in the Europa League this season and have led at the break in four of their seven games. They now have one of the best defensive records in the competition and will hope to add another home European win to their collection.
They’re the big favourites to do just that. The Foxes are 8/15 odds-on to secure the win in 90 minutes and to reach the last 16 of the Europa League. It’s 7/2 for a draw or 13/2 for a Slavia Prague win. It’s way out at 14/1 for the 0-0 draw that would secure extra time in this tie.
But a win for the hosts is a far likelier outcome. As previously mentioned, Leicester have an excellent European record at the King Power Stadium and have only ever lost one European home match in their history. That was against Atletico Madrid in the first round of the UEFA Cup back in 1997. This season they’ve won all three Europa League fixtures without conceding a goal and are 13/8 to win this to nil.
But they haven’t just been comfortable wins for Leicester, they’ve all been rather convincing. The Foxes scored an average of 3.00 in their home matches and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see a similar display here. It’s 6/4 for Leicester to win with a European handicap of 0-1 and 4/1 for 0-2.
Leicester tend to start well in matches. The Foxes have the fourth-best first-half record in the Europa League this season and only a couple of sides have taken more points. The Foxes are 21/20 to win the first half and it’s 11/4 for a first-half Asian handicap of Leicester City -1.
