How Ukraine Qualified for Euro 2020
It was an impressive campaign from Ukraine. They got past tough competition in Portugal to qualify for Euro 2020. Ukraine topped Group B, beating the holders to top spot and achieving their place in the tournament proper. They even took a win and a draw from the two matches against Portugal.
What’s most impressive about Ukraine’s campaign is that they remained unbeaten throughout. Only four other sides could boast such a feat during the qualification campaign and it is elite company. Belgium, Spain, Denmark, and Italy were the only other sides not to lose in qualification. With that, Ukraine have now qualified for three successive tournaments.
How North Macedonia Qualified for Euro 2020
Things were a little trickier for North Macedonia in Group G. They were drawn against some quality sides like Poland, Austria, and Israel. All four made it out of the six-team group but North Macedonia had to go via the play-offs. They finished third in the group, five points behind Austria in second.
They came up against a strong Kosovo side in the semi-finals of Path D. They came through that match 2-1 and faced Georgia in the final. One goal was enough for North Macedonia to clinch their place in a major international tournament for the first time. Star man and captain, Goran Pandev grabbed it in a 1-0 win.
Ukraine v North Macedonia Stats & Analysis
Ukraine’s qualification success was built on a solid base. Their defence shone in qualifying with some excellent performances against tough opposition. They kept clean sheets in 63% of their eight matches. Only four nations kept clean sheets in a higher percentage of their qualification fixtures than Ukraine.
North Macedonia’s own figure is a lot less impressive. They struggled to keep the goals out during qualification and kept clean sheets in just 25% of their matches.
But they also showed weaknesses at the other end. North Macedonia hardly convinced in front of goal. They managed 15 goals in all and had an xG of just 1.27 per match. The result was a number of low-scoring matches. They had an average number of total match goals of 2.50, one of the lowest figures in the entire qualification round. They’ll need to do better at the finals.
Ukraine v North Macedonia Bets
Ukraine are the big favourites to secure the three points. They are 4/6 to win the match as they aim to make it out of the group stage for the first time since competing under the name of Ukraine. A draw is 11/4 and North Macedonia are out at 5/1 to get a win in Group C. A North Macedonia win or a draw double chance is available at 11/8 if you expect Ukraine to drop points here.
It may not be the most exciting match of the tournament. North Macedonia’s defensive issues may well come back to hurt them here and their lack of creativity may fail to get past a solid Ukraine backline. Ukraine are 5/4 to win to nil which represents good value. Both teams scored in just 38% of their qualifying matches.
