How Sweden Qualified for Euro 2020
Sweden got through a tricky group to get here. They finished second behind Spain in qualification Group F and beat out their Scandinavian neighbours, Norway in third. They drew three of their 10 matches including both of the fixtures against Norway.
The difference for Sweden came in the other matches. They took six points off group rivals, Romania with home and away wins. Norway took just two points from their two matches with Romania and finished four points behind Sweden as a result. It’s the sixth successive European Championships tournament that Sweden have qualified for. They haven’t made it out of the group stage since 2004 so they’ll be hoping to do just that this year.
How Slovakia Qualified for Euro 2020
Slovakia took the long route to get to the finals. They almost didn’t have to after missing out on automatic qualification by just a single point. Slovakia finished on 13 points in Group E, just one behind rivals, Wales in second and one ahead of Hungary in fourth.
They lost out to Wales in the group stages of qualification but got their revenge on two other sides from the British Isles in the play-offs. They beat the Republic of Ireland on penalties in the semi-finals before coming up against Northern Ireland in the final. It took extra time but Slovakia overcame Northern Ireland by two goals to one. Michal Duris scored the winner in extra time.
Sweden v Slovakia Stats & Analysis
Sweden showed their consistency in qualification. They had the tenth best record of any side in qualification across the groups. Sweden were strong in both parts of the pitch and failed to score in just one match, the 3-0 defeat to Spain. They kept five clean sheets in the process, a number that just six nations could top.
Slovakia weren’t quite as strong defensively. They managed just two clean sheets in their eight group stage matches and both of them came at home. They really showed their offensive weaknesses as well. Slovakia struggled to make chances in many of their matches. They finished with an average expected goals per match figure of 1.37. The result was a number of low-scoring matches. Slovakia finished qualification with an average of 2.70 total match goals from their 10 fixtures.
Sweden v Slovakia Bets
Sweden are the big favourites to win here. They are odds-on at 8/11 to secure the three points and to give themselves a major boost of qualifying from Group E. A draw is 13/5 and Slovakia are out at 9/3 to secure the victory. A Slovakia win or a draw double chance is at 6/5 if you fancy Sweden to drop points.
But they’re the favourites for a reason. They showed their defensive solidity in qualification and 6/4 for Sweden to win to nil looks good value. Just don’t expect a high-scoring match. Sweden have some quality attacking players but Slovakia struggle to make chances. Under 2.5 total match goals looks good value at 5/8 with under 1.5 at 7/4.
