Diego Sanchez
The veteran Diego Sanchez is 2-3 in his last 5 – not bad considering he is 38-years old. Most recently he lost a unanimous decision to Michael Chiesa back in July of 2019.
Sanchez likes to pressure his opponents and can wrestle and strike. Diego can get a bit wild in his fights. Sometimes he will meet his opponent in the middle of the octagon and trade shots – entertaining, sure, but not how you win tough fights.
Sanchez absorbs 3.07 strikes per minute and has been knocked out 4 times in his last 7 fights.
Sanchez is a pressure fighter and he has great cardio. He often tires his opponents out and gets a decision or a KO/TKO win. He also has great grappling skills.
Now, looking at weaknesses, Diego can be overwhelmed by his opponent. This is apparent when looking at his 3 recent knockout losses where he was finished in the first round.
Michel Pereira
26-year old Michel Pereira is 1-1 in his two UFC fights. In his debut, he defeated Danny Roberts in impressive fashion with an astonishing first-round flying knee KO in May. A few months later he faced Tristan Connelly where he lost a unanimous decision. Now he’s looking to get back on the win column.
Pereira is a very unorthodox fighter. He likes to throw flying knees, crazy kicks and flips inside the octagon. Don’t be fooled by his wild fighting style because he possesses crazy knockout power and he can put his opponent out with one shot, as we saw in his fight against Danny Roberts.
Pereira is a strong finisher and holds 43% (10 wins) of his 23 wins by knockout. He has also shown submission skills in his early career, but don’t expect him to submit a grappling veteran like Diego Sanchez, who has never been submitted in his 41 fight career. Pereira has a 55% striking accuracy in the UFC and all he needs is one shot to land the KO.
The data we have from Pereira in his UFC career is limited, given he has only had two fights. However, he does not do well in the later rounds. He’s lost 80% (8) of his 10 losses via decision so it seems that the key to beating him is to have good enough defense to survive the early rounds so you can tire him out in the later rounds. Against Tristan Connelly, Pereira was unable to finish the Canadian and quickly faded after displaying backflips and fence jumps in the first round.
