It’s the opening day of the 2024 Major League Baseball season, and for the 27th time since 1902, the White Sox and Tigers meet to start the campaign. Meaningless Spring Training games are concluded, and we can finally get excited for a new season of baseball. Our White Sox vs Tigers prediction at 1.91 odds is available in the article below! The Tigers are favored to win this one at 1.55 odds while the White Sox are priced at 2.50 odds, The run line is -1.5 and the total line is 7.5.
The White Sox open the year at home after a rough pre-season that saw the South-Siders win only 9 of 32 games. Tied with the Texas Rangers for the worst record in the Cactus League, the White Sox gave up 169 runs. And they’ll be sending an untested starter to the bump for the season opener.
Our resident baseball expert Ej Garr is back again for another campaign, so let’s see where his thoughts are to open the new season. You can find more of his picks and predictions in our Expert Insights section.
Odds are available on March 28th, 2024. odds may now differ.
The White Sox and Tigers have met 26 times to open the season since 1902. They have split the spoils with 13 wins apiece. The Tigers have won 8 of the last 10 opening-day meetings with Chicago. However, and Detroit is heavily favored to take a win in this game.
An unlikely pair of starters will take the mound for this opening-day affair. Garrett Crochet and Tarik Skubal will toe the slab.
The Tigers enjoyed a solid Spring Training camp having lost only 9 of their 33 games preparing for the start of the regular season. After his left Flexor tendon injury in August of 2022, Tarik Skubal only appeared in 15 MLB games a season ago. Skubal produced a 7 – 3 record with a solid 2.80 ERA, and he made only 3 appearances in Spring Training. With a 13 – 2 K to BB ratio, Skubal only allowed 9 hits and 3 ER over 9 innings of work.
Garrett Crochet missed the entire 2022 season due to Tommy John surgery, and he was limited to only 25 appearances in 2023. Crochet pitched in only 13 MLB games and 12 minor league games a season ago. He will be making his first start in the bigs today.
Crochet appeared in four Spring Training games making one start, and through 9 IP he only allowed 7 hits without one earned run against him. As impressive as that may be, that is still a limited sample size. I question his ability to last very long in this outing.
I don’t expect either starter to last more than the standard 5 innings, and I will go on a limb and say that one of them won’t even get there. I am suggesting this total go over the 7.5 runs because bullpen issues will play a factor for both teams in 2024.
I also see the 1st 5 Inning total listed at a mere 4 runs, and I am expecting this to be a 4 – 2 game as the 6th inning arrives. I do not doubt that we will find two more runs along the way to splash this total so we can start the new season on a positive note.
The White Sox have 7 pitchers listed on the injury report for opening day, five of which are relievers. Relievers Matt Foster, Joe Barlow, Corey Knebel, John Brebbia, and Jimmy Lambert make up that list.
The White Sox were one of three American League teams that lost over 100 games in 2023, and a 31 – 50 home record didn’t impress either.
Chicago will open the season with a 3-game series against Detroit at home before the Atlanta Braves come to town for another 3-game set. The White Sox will then hit the road for a four-game series with Kansas City before heading to Cleveland to play the Indians for 3 days.
The Tigers are only reporting two injuries headed towards opening day. Center Fielder Riley Greene will likely bat second in the lineup despite being listed as probable, and Starting Pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Lang has a groin injury that has no timetable for his return.
Detroit finished the 2-23 campaign in second place behind the Minnesota Twins in 2023, although their record was under .500 at 78 – 84. The Twins were the only team in the AL Central to finish with a winning record.
The Tigers will open the campaign in Chicago and then head to New York to play a 3-game series with the Mets at Citi Field. Detroit will then face the Oakland A’s to open the home portion of the schedule before heading to Pittsburgh for a quick 2-game series.
The Tigers won 8 of the 13 regular season meetings against the White Sox in 2023. These two teams have met a total of 2234 times since 1901, and the Tigers hold an 1128 – 1106 edge in the series.
