The Baltimore Orioles are on their first five-game winning streak since 2020. On Friday evening, they take on an Angels team which has arguably been the most disappointing in the big leagues. Baltimore remarkably has two more wins than Los Angeles, and the team from south California lost the first of this four-game series on Thursday.

The Angels are 11-28 since May 24th. They have now lost three of four against Baltimore in 2022. While the Orioles remain bottom of MLB’s toughest division, the Birds have played their way onto the fringes of the wildcard race with a 19-14 run since the start of June.

It’s easy to pin the Angels’ recent woes on poor pitching, as has often been the case in Anaheim. The truth is, though, this is a team-wide problem outside of Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani. Yes, the Angels’ rotation has not been phenomenal, but the offence has been at least as problematic outside of the two megastars. Los Angeles has a team 73 wRC+ against right-handed pitchers since the start of June. Only the tanking Oakland Athletics have a worse mark.

The Angels face a righty on Friday in the shape of Tyler Wells. The 27-year-old has given up just three runs in his last four starts, including six innings of three-hit, one-run ball in his previous outing. After underachieving his expected numbers in 2021, Wells has been on the other side in 2022, pitching to a 3.09 ERA. This is not some fluke, however, as his 3.42 xERA ranks well above average. His four-pitch mix and elite control is keeping hitters off balance.

It’s fair to say Wells has a marked advantage over his Friday opponent Reid Detmers. The southpaw has a 5.02 xERA on the year and has been trending in the wrong direction of late with nine earned runs allowed across his last two starts. His fastball has taken a particular battering in 2022.

Detmers is a perfect opponent for a surging Orioles team looking to make it six in a row – they have a 131 wRC+ against lefties since the start of June with only the Blue Jays making more hard contact in such matchups over that period. Expect to see some power from Baltimore at the plate; Detmers has allowed four homers across his last two starts.

Stretching back to June 20th, the Angels have won just five games. Three of those were when Ohtani started. They have lost Detmers’ last six starts.

Reputation aside, Baltimore should be favoured more heavily than the current odds. This team has been playing good baseball of late, while the team from Anaheim is in complete disarray. We’re taking the Orioles at 5/6 to make it six wins on the bounce on Friday night at Camden Yards.
