- Seattle Mariners vs Los Angeles Angels: Angels to win
SEATTLE VS LOS ANGELES ANGELS BEST BET
Two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani is taking the mound for Los Angeles, who have fallen from 27-17 to 29-35. The firing of Joe Maddon has not had the desired impact. Phil Nevin is just 2-6 since taking over, and the Angels have scored just twice in their last three games. They can take confidence into Thursday from having their ace on the mound, however. One of their two wins since May 24th came when Ohtani started against the Red Sox, and the right-hander owns a 3.24 xERA on the season.
Ohtani matches up with George Kirby. Kirby, a former first-round pick, has made just seven starts in his big-league career with a 4.11 FIP. He allowed five runs, three of which were earned, when he faced the Red Sox in his previous start.
Despite their slump of late, the Angels are still above average by wRC+ against right-handers. Seattle is at 111 by that metric, with the Angels sitting at 107.
Kirby has the benefit of surprise on Major League hitters at the moment. This is the first time the Angels are facing him. It’s an interesting matchup as a result, particularly for a strikeout-prone Angels offence (no team strikes out more often against right-handers). Kirby is slightly above average by strikeout rate, yet he’s only clocked seven Ks over his last 11 frames.
Los Angeles will be hoping Ohtani has shaken off a couple of rough starts against the Blue Jays and Yankees at the end of last month and the start of this. He was back on track facing Boston and has seven starts to his name this year with two or fewer earned runs.
The Angels’ offence has been woeful since May 24th, putting up an 86 wRC+. This is a team in an historically bad rut, but they are too talented for it to continue much longer. The offence is still up in eighth in xwOBA, and an Ohtani start is the ideal time to get their season somewhere close to back on track.
Mike Trout is healthy again. The run prevention has actually been pretty good under Nevin, with just 26 allowed over the last seven. Seattle’s offence is good, but not great, and they haven’t exactly been playing perfect baseball of late with just a 7-7 record in June.
Getting evens on the Angels to win with Ohtani on the mound is always going to be tempting. It looks like particularly good value against a rookie who has been far from dominant in his first weeks in the Majors – back the road team to get just their third win since May 24th.
