The 36-27 Minnesota Twins are going for a series win against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Minnesota beat the Mariners on Monday, but they are slight underdogs for Tuesday’s contest at T-Mobile Park. Seattle has been considerably better at home than one the road, though they have lost four of their last five in the Pacific Northwest.

Joe Ryan, who has been the ace of the Twins staff, is on the mound on Tuesday night. He’s matching up with Seattle’s number one arm, Logan Gilbert. Both pitchers have stellar numbers for the campaign, with their ERAs in the twos. There has been an element of good fortune, with the pair both exceeding their xERA by a considerable amount. Ryan still ranks in the 67th percentile by that metric, while Gilbert is below average with an xERA of almost four.

Both offences rank in the top 10 by xwOBA. The Twins are behind only the Yankees, yet they are just 13th in runs per game. Seattle is in the bottom 10 in runs per contest, and have been held to just 19 runs over their last six. This is an offence which has blown hot and cold in 2022 but has a 111 wRC+ against right-handers.

Ryan has been one of the biggest stories of this season to date. He’s not a hard thrower, but he commands his fastball well and keeps hitters off-balance with the slider to righties and change up to lefties. Groundballs are a regular occurrence when Ryan is on the bump, and this makes for an interesting matchup with the Mariners, who excel at getting the ball in the air.

While he gave up a couple of runs when he faced the Mariners at the start of the year, Ryan has been very effective over his last two, conceding just two earned runs across 11.2 frames.

Gilbert is coming into this start off a difficult appearance against the Astros. He only gave up three earned, but Houston worked three walks and only struck out three times. The former first-round pick has allowed three or more runs in five of his last seven starts. Minnesota is sixth in walk rate against righties – Gilbert’s pitch count could be pushed high early on if his command isn’t there again.

It’s not been the best stretch for the Twins, with just six wins from their last 13 games. This pitching matchup favours the road team, however, with Ryan likely able to keep the Seattle bats relatively quiet with his knack for generating soft contact.

Gilbert could be in for a tougher evening. The Twins can make him work early on, which should allow them to get a good shot at a Mariners bullpen which has been inconsistent this year.

The Twins should be favoured here. There’s good value backing them at 2.01 on the Moneyline.
