The red-hot Houston Astros continue their New York-road trip on Wednesday night against the Mets. Houston beat the Mets on Tuesday in a 9-1 blowout and has won three of its five games in the Big Apple against the Mets and Yankees, with the two losses coming by walkoff. Prior to this trip, the Astros also beat the Mets twice in Houston. They are betting favourites for Wednesday’s contest.

It’s Justin Verlander against Taijuan Walker at Citi Field. Verlander has returned in 2022 and never missed a beat, immediately pitching like a Cy Young contender once again. The veteran right-hander has a 2.22 ERA, a 3.11 xERA and he comes into this game off seven innings of one-run ball against the Yankees last time out.

Verlander throws his fastball 50% of the time, and it remains a great pitch. He faces a Mets line up which is fourth in production against such pitches. There is a similar issue for Walker, however, with the Astros just behind the Mets against fastballs. Walker throws his change up 30% of the time and it’ll be interesting to see if he leans more heavily on that pitch facing an Astros line up which is considerably less effective on such pitches.

After riding some batted ball fortune earlier in the season, Walker has pitched better of late. His xERA has come closer to a reasonable number, sitting right around league average. He’s still not striking many hitters out in general, though, and the Astros will make him work hard for every out. Houston is top seven in strikeout rate when facing righties, and they own a 115 wRC+ in those matchups for the season.

This Astros offence has really caught fire over the last month with a team 130 wRC+. Yordan Alvarez is the best hitter in the sport. The Mets have slowed down a little, with a 109 wRC+ over the same span. Houston got to Carlos Carrasco in a big way on Tuesday, while New York was shut down by Framber Valdez. They have scored just 26 runs over their last eight games.

The Mets have an impressive 24-11 at home, but the Astros have been just as good on the road, winning 26 of their 42 games away from Minute Maid Park.

While these are two of the best teams in the sport, and there’s a decent chance this is our 2022 World Series matchup, we’ve got to take the Astros even at odds on for this one. Houston has been playing the much better baseball of late, and the starting pitching matchup is a no-brainer in the ‘Stros favour with Verlander recently shutting down the fearsome Yankees offence.
