We’re headed to the Garden State, where the Monmouth Hawks will play host to the Northeastern Huskies on Monday night, and I hope you have enjoyed going 3 – 0 to start the year with your college hoops bets. I know, I did miss my suggestion on a same-game combo in there, but my main bets are 3 – 0, and that’s okay with us!
I am turning to this game because first of all, the choice of games on the board today doesn’t feature any high-profile matches, but I do follow the Coastal Athletic Conference pretty closely anyway so this is perfect for me.
Secondly, when I saw that the line setters were barely asking for points here, I knew we had our best bet of the day. Monmouth is third in the CAA standings, and they need wins like these to keep pace with Drexel and the College of Charleston. The Hawks have enjoyed playing here at the Bank, as they have taken 5 wins from their 6 games played at home, while Northeeasern has struggled away from home. The Huskies sport a lowly 2 – 6 record on the road this season, and this contest will result in another loss in conference play for Northeastern.
Don’t you dare attempt to say defense and Huskies in the same sentence, because you will be arrested in 5 counties for lack of paying attention! We have 350 teams or so in NCAA Division 1 hoops, and Northeastern ranks 343rd in opponents’ FG%, so they just have not been able to slow anyone down.
The Northeastern totals have been flying in as a result, as 11 of their 14 games have all cashed to the Over, and the line setters are only putting 140.5 on the board for this total tonight. I am not going to touch that because I just like Monmouth to win this game and cover the chalk at home.
I have played one favourite this year, and it cashed for us last Wednesday before I hit both of my underdog bets on Thursday and Friday. This is the spot to lay the points and how about the emergence of Xander Rice?
Rice is putting up one hell of an opening campaign in his first year with Monmouth averaging a ridiculous 18.8 PPG along with a stupendous 87.4% clip from the free-throw line. It must be nice for Head Coach King Rice to be able to have his son kicking ass for his program which is already way ahead of last season’s pace. Let’s keep in mind that Monmouth won a TOTAL of 7 games all of last year, and here they are at 8 – 6 battling in a new conference.
This is only the second season that Monmouth has been playing in the CAA after jumping out of the MAAC, so the trends point to up as far as I am concerned.
I also like the balance this Hawks team has all 8 of their main guys are healthy and contributing to the team concept while they let Rice carry the load. Jack Colling is the only other double-digit scorer for Monmouth averaging 11+ PPG, but this team shares the ball well and should be able to get past Northeastern at home tonight.

The Hawks only won 7 games a season ago, and they have already passed that mark with 8 wins as January gets underway. Monmouth has won three of their last four games with a loss to Oklahoma as the only blemish.
Monmouth ranks 43rd in the nation from behind the arc averaging 37.2% for the campaign.
Northeastern won the last and only other meeting with Monmouth last February at home, 77 – 62. The Huskies have lost four of their last five games with the lone win coming against Central Connecticut State from Division 2.
