Welcome to 2024 and Happy New Year! Our resident college hoops expert Ej Garr wishes all of our readers good health and success in 2024, and he hopes to add to that success with an offer from the match between La Salle and George Mason on Wednesday night.
The home team is listed as the underdog, and Ej believes that it is deservedly so because he has the Patriots set to win this affair on the road. Let’s see why that’s the case, as Ej plans to start the new year with a winner!

As you all know by now, I am not one to play favourites on the road but in this case, I think we have no other choice but to lay the chalk and expect the Patriots to sneak out of Philly with a win. The George Mason Patriots enter this game sporting an 11 – 2 record, and outside of a loss to Tennessee, they are 8 – 1 over their last 9 games.
Now, this is the beginning of conference play for nearly every program, and now that the new year has arrived, we won’t be dealing with ugly, meaningless games as we have for the last two months, for the most part.
UNLV transfer Keyshawn Hall wasn’t expecting a ton of playing time with the Rebels, so he packed his bags for the Atlantic-10 conference and landed on the Patriots roster in the off-season. Hall has made a great choice after barely seeing 11 minutes per game in Sin City, because now he is seeing over half an hour on the court per game for head coach Tony Skinn.
Skinn is no stranger to trying to make George Mason a better basketball team with no bigger evidence coming from his playing career, where he led the Patriots to a pair of NCAA Tournaments. After four stints as an assistant with LA Tech, Seton Hall, Ohio State, and Maryland, Skinn has already made quite an impact in his first campaign as the head coach of a program.
Skinn relies on a guard-heavy rotation, as six of the top seven scorers for the Patriots appear in the George Mason backcourt. Another key addition to that backcourt comes in the form of Virginia Tech transfer Darius Maddox. Maddox brings 3 years of experience to the program, and he is by far having his best season as a collegiate. His 41.2% from behind the arc looks pretty damn good next to his obnoxious free throw percentage, as he has only missed two of his 32 attempts from the charity stripe.
La Salle has lost two of their last three games, and the last time on the floor against Howard, this team looked completely unprepared losing to a 4 – 8 Bison squad. That is not the best way to gain some momentum heading into conference play with George Mason coming to town.
George Mason wins this game 72 – 67, and it may be close but the better team will find a way to pull away enough to cover the -3 and cash our ticket.
